Character Being Applied For: Kalyn, Betweener

Character

True Name: Xuan Tian :: xuan chinese 'star'; tian chinese 'sky'
Use-Name: Kalyn, derived from Khalilah
Nicknames / Aliases:

Khalilah Walks-with-stars :: khalilah arabic 'beloved, sweetheart'

Stella Maris :: stella latin 'star'; maris latin 'the sea'

Aikouka Hoshizora :: aikouka japanese 'sea lover'; hoshizora japanese 'starry sky'

Gender: female
Race: mixblood. Half tennyo [asian celestial maiden], half selkie [celtic water spirit].
Age: appears: indeterminate college age, roughly 20ish; actual: 83
Birthdate / Sign: Or when they celebrate if they haven't one. Relating astrology to personality is generally nice.

Likes: Sunshine, fluffy kittens, gummy worms? A little bit on why they like it is always a good thing.
Dislikes: Strike that, reverse it. Clouds, rats, peas and carrots. Otherwise, same as above.
Hobbies: The things they do with their free time. Once again, why is nice.

Appearance:

In appearance, Kalyn clearly favours her mother: her hair is the colour of the midnight sky, highlighted with streaks the shade of the sky next the full moon. Candlelight brings out more silver in it, and it seems to shimmer with little stars under any kind of natural light. It falls in perfect, soft ringlets down her back, just short enough to slide over her shoulders with each move of her head. Wisps of bangs shade her eyes, too short to curl.

Typically, despite the difficulty involved in braiding curly hair, Kalyn wears her hair in an upsidedown french braid, which puts funny kinks in the curls when she lets it out. The natural part tends to fall on the right side, and strands naturally escape to hang over her left eye. Her eyes show her mixed heritage the most: at times the silver of the moon, at times the deep blue of the sunset sky, at times the crystalline turquoise of a tropical sea or the grayblue of the cold Atlantic. There is no predictable pattern to the shifts of Kalyn's eyes, not by emotion or by clothing or by season. Anger fills her eyes with black, making them seeming pupilless and depthless.

Height-wise, Kalyn is clearly of the celtic fae, standing six feet shoeless. One might almost surmise some sidhe in her background, save that she lacks the pointed ears and ethereal beauty of that fae. Kalyn's features are all earthly and all oriental, a pointed face with stubborn and strong chin, the almond eyes, and tanned olivine skin. She is distinctly and clearly feminine, without the flaunting of her femaleness that makes some men uneasy and others consider women easy prey.

Vocally, Kalyn is unremarkable, a smooth clear alto voice. In dress, also, there is little to mark her out from any other woman, human or fae. Her only jewelry is a smooth band known as an oathband. She keeps her magical robe locked up [see weaknesses]. Her ribs bear a palm-shaped scar, faintly silver in sheen, relic of the duel that drove her from the Court Above.

Personality: Write enough to give a feeling for your character -- several paragraphs at least. One of the definite make-or-break sections of the application. Nobody is perfect; flaws should be evident, but at the same time nobody is evil beyond some spark of decency (we hope). Try to balance things out to make a real person here, not a saint or a demon.

History: You can have all the secret and mysterious parts of history you want, but you're going to have to tell ME them. Yes, I mention this elsewhere, but I reiterate here for good measure. Birth to present, including what brought them to Gibraltar, how they fit into the conflict, how they came to serve wherever they do, et cetera.

NPCs: Family members, friends, victims, enemies, slaves, goons -- you name it. Try to limit it to the important ones who are likely to show up in the stories.

Powers: Fae get powers drawn from their mythological "blood" -- that same dryad would be able to speak to trees, et cetera, while a silkie would be able to shapechange into a seal and such. Mortals may have nothing, or may be hedge-wizards or psychics. Halflings can evince the powers of both sides, though neither should be as strong as the fullbloods. See here for more information.
Weaknesses: The classical fae weakness of cold iron, perhaps, or the silkie's ties to the sea and to her sealskin coat. Halflings will similarly have only some of the weakness of each side of fae blood. These should be weaknesses as related to powers, not personality flaws. Note that mortals regardless of powers are more succeptible to psionics then fae, though the degree varies from individual to individual.

Court / Affiliation: If Kalyn could be said to belong to any faction at all, it would be those Between. Having been outcast herself, she sympathises the most with the native fae -- it doesn't hurt that they took her in -- and believes that there must be a way for a peace to be brought and maintained, something that would make everyone happy. She's an idealist.
Title: Kalyn's an outcast, belonging to neither Court Above nor Court Below, and not even the native fae want to anger either powerful Court by giving her any title beyond shaman.
Goals: Kalyn wants acceptance. On her terms, not by betrayal of her ideals. She wants to be accepted the way she is, as what she is, and she'd just as soon not have to fight her way through the greater part of the Courts to earn it.

Writing Sample: Unless you feel your application shows your writing style with this character and in general adequately well. Writing samples should be done in third person, featuring your character in any kind of situation at all. Dialogue is nice, interior monologues are nice -- anything that lets me get a feel for the 'voice'. Besides, I like writing samples. ^__^

Secrets: Anything that didn't get fit in earlier that you think I should know about your character but you want to keep from your fellow players? I don't care if they happen to be gay or think that the Queen is an evil bitch, but if they're plotting to sell the Court Above out to the King in return for a title, that's something you should tell me. Or else.
Anything Else: Pan loves you.

You're done! Send the completed application off in the body of an e-mail or as a webpage link to me with the subject heading [Lands Above] Character Name. Attatched files WILL be discarded and the applications automatically rejected; I'm a paranoid person and I hate attatchments. If this is a problem for you, e-mail me and we'll work out a compromise.
And that's that!
