the Tale of Sir Isaac

She squeaked slightly, in surprise. Looking up at him, she coloured more deeply, left a little breathless by his intent declaration. “I love you, too,” she whispered finally.

“Always.” He grinned and nuzzled their noses together, smiling against her reddened cheeks as he rocked her gently in his arms. “Did I surprise you or something there? You look quite shocked.”

“I-I haven’t been — no one here touches me except m-my maid. I didn’t expect it.” Disdaining the beauty of the dress, she slipped off the bench and into his arms more fully. “I had forgotten what it feels like, having your arms around me. How safe I feel.” With a little sigh, she laid her head on his chest.

Summer chuckled, starting to nibble at his earlobe. “You’ve certainly risen to it today,” he teased. Pressing the soap into Isaac’s hand, he whispered, “Your turn.”

“…Is that an innuendo?” He blinked and tilted his head to the side, moaning faintly at the gentle bite. He took the soap and dropped to his knees, lathering up his hands and curling his fingers around Summer’s ankles.

The empath closed his eyes, revelling in the gentle touch. “Would I do that?” he murmured. He cupped his hands under the water, mischievously, and poured it over Isaac’s head.

She ducked her head, faint colour rising in her face. “I — missed you so much. I was so lonely … at least when you t-took me away with you to Hale Castle you were still there. You watched over me all the time. Here, there was no one. After my twin left, there was no one.”

Very quietly, she confessed, hiding her face, “I fell into despair.”

His breath hitched and he pulled her against his chest, burying his face in her hair. “I’m so sorry, Summer…I never meant for things to end up like this, but I promise that it’ll all be better soon. We’re to be married, you and I, and I’ll always love you and take care of you,” he breathed out and cupped her chin gently, angling her head up so that he could look her in the eye. “I love you, Summer.”

She squeaked slightly, in surprise. Looking up at him, she coloured more deeply, left a little breathless by his intent declaration. “I love you, too,” she whispered finally.

The redhead leaned in, whispering hotly into his ear, “We don’t live together, darlin’. If we did, even your teenage hormones would wear out.”

He shivered and tugged him close, playing with his hair. “That’s a challenge I’m willing to accept.”

Summer chuckled, starting to nibble at his earlobe. “You’ve certainly risen to it today,” he teased. Pressing the soap into Isaac’s hand, he whispered, “Your turn.”

As she was shoved, Summer screamed — not with pain or fear, but rage. It sounded like it was shredding her throat, so vicious was it. “Too many words,” she shouted, and half a second later the man with the gun gaped at her, eyes widening, before he dropped the weapon and bolted out the door, whimpering.

The utter fear she was projecting swept through the house, and she made no effort whatsoever to control it, slamming into every other mind within the walls. Her skin felt like it was on fire, and she stalked up the stairs after the larger man, her hair billowing behind her in a hot wind.

Isaac heard the scream, covering his ears and wishing he wasn’t cursed with werewolf hearing in that moment. Luckily for him, Summer was on his side, so he wasn’t feeling the full effect of her powers. He let out a relived sigh as one of the men dashed out of the house, fear overwhelming him. He found himself not even worrying about the man charging up the stairs: Summer could handle him.

The man’s eyes widened as he glanced at the woman, astonished by her power: she looked like she could catch alight any second… “Look, lady, you don’t understand — ” he tried to reason with her desperately. “The man you’re looking after is an animal: he belongs in a cage. He’s not human, he’s dangerous and given the chance he’ll kill us all. Don’t put yourself in danger like that — let me take him somewhere he can be contained. Please.”

She snarled, “/I’m/ not human. He’s offered me nothing but politeness; you barged into my home at night and threatened me and my guest. /You/ are the animal. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life cowering like one, GET OUT.”

She was so angry she felt sick, a faint tremor in her muscles warning of the edge she was walking. But she could not show even a hint of wavering; this man, this monster, would seize on that immediately. “If you still believe I cannot take care of myself, you are a fool,” she hissed.

Ace drew his shower curtains and stepped down on his mat, towel wrapped low around his waist. Just as he moved to tend to his scruff before the mirror, he tripped over something fluffy. Looking down, he saw Helios at his feet, ears flattened, eyes narrowed to slits. “How did you…?”

Helios licked his nose insolently, before bending to lick drops of water off Ace’s feet. He washed one spot assiduously, before hopping in the shower and looking up at the shower head. Then he looked at Ace, tail waving, and back at the shower head.

“Extra cheese?” she said, pleading. Then she fell silent, so Ace could talk to the guy on the other end of the line — someone he was obviously very familiar with. His smile — the little, sweet one — still made her heart skip a beat, and she wondered if he could tell.

“So … ” Summer said slightly awkwardly, “now what do we do? Am I allowed to sit you down and kiss you breathless?”

Ace overlooked her for a moment, heaving a sigh of mock-exasperation followed by a drawled out, “Okay…”

“Make that one medium extra cheese pizza pie. Give a slice or two to Fredo, okay? Tell him to stay outta trouble or he’ll have to answer to me.” A haughty laugh came from the other line.

“I’ll stop by tomorrow so we can talk more, okay? Yep, same address, same phone number. Alright, bye, Sammy.” Ace smiled before pressing end, turning his attention to the petite madame in his arms.

“Did you even have to ask, hon?” Leading her over to the couch, he plopped down and pulled her onto his lap.

She couldn’t help the giggle as she was settled on his lap. “I don’t want to go too fast and scare you off,” she confessed. She snuggled into his chest, making a contented hum, before starting to kiss her way along his collarbone and up his throat.

Summer’s gaze immediately snapped to him, the melancholy instantly erased by a smile. When he kissed her on the forehead, the little girl jumped up and tugged on his arm, pulling him down to whisper in his ear, “She doesn’t like that. Don’t do that.”

Then she gave him an urchin’s grin and shot off like a bolt. Summer watched her go with a softer, fond smile. “Sarai is the head cook’s middle daughter. They’ve all been very concerned about my health of late.”

Isaac blinked and turned away from Summer to drop into a crouch so that he was level with the little girl, a crooked smile tugging at his lips at her whisper. “Well, I wasn’t going to kiss her on the lips in front of you, was I?” He chuckled faintly, rolling his eyes fondly as he watched her leave, before focusing his attention back on Summer.

“Really? Haven’t you been eating?” Concern flooded his features and his eyes and hands roamed her face and torso, a soft sound escaping him. “What happened while you were here, Summer?”

She ducked her head, faint colour rising in her face. “I — missed you so much. I was so lonely … at least when you t-took me away with you to Hale Castle you were still there. You watched over me all the time. Here, there was no one. After my twin left, there was no one.”

That made Summer laugh so hard he ended up leaning against Isaac, abandoning his chore. “I wouldn’t get used to it.”

“And why not? I’d return the favour, no matter what body you were in,” he pointed out and wrapped his arms around him.

The redhead leaned in, whispering hotly into his ear, “We don’t live together, darlin’. If we did, even your teenage hormones would wear out.”
