“I need a bodyguard,” she said softly. She clasped her hands together, one foot swinging, and watched him with narrow eyes. “I need someone I can totally rely on, who won\u2019t leave me, or sell me out.” After a moment, she fished a cuff key on a chain from between her breasts. “Keep me safe, and I\u2019ll set you free.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“If you set me free I\u2019d have no reason to stick around and keep you safe. Keep you safe from what? Isn\u2019t there someone you can hire or are slaves a better investment. How free do you mean when you say free? Off the collar or free of you and any other master?” he shot back in a low, even voice, eyes still hard. He\u2019d seen too much abuse to no be suspicious. Of everything.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The key hung there from her hand, as she listened to him calmly. When he wound down, she let it go, sliding back out of sight behind fabric. “I can’t buy your loyalty with your freedom, then, hm?” She clasped her hands back together, eyes flicking to gaze out the window as they left the city behind abruptly.<\/p>\n
