The bartender raised an eyebrow at the girl as she set a box on the counter of his bar. \u201cYou\u2019re that Summer girl, right?\u201d he asked absently, and then nodded as he stepped away to find his employer. Several minutes later, he returned, \u201cVex\u2019ll be out momentarily.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

And several moments later, the Mesmer appeared, walking over to where Summer stood at the bar. He was dressed in his finest. \u201c\u2018Ello, Precious,\u201d he greeted, \u201cYa called?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Stuck it in the mini-fridge,” he told her absently, going over to open the fridge\u2019s door and take out the cake\u2019s box. He set it on the coffee table and grabbed a beer for himself out of the fridge before kicking its door shut.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Fork, knife, fork, knife, spoon, spoon,” she sing-songed to herself, rummaging through drawers. “Aha!” Triumphantly, she held up a knife and a spoon, turning to Vex. “Beer with red velvet cake?” she asked. “I would have thought wine would go better.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Vex had taken a seat again on the leather couch, cracking open the bottle. At her question, he shrugged, \u201cProbably would, but I \u2018aven\u2019t \u2018ad a good beer in months. Seemed worth it.\u201d He didn\u2019t drink beer often, had to be in the right mood, but when he did, it was expensive and delicious. \u201cThere\u2019s wine in the fridge too, if you were interested,\u201d he added as an after-thought.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Her eyes glittered with her low laugh. “I’m going to get drunk on you.” Summer held up the spoon in one hand and the knife in the other, then put them behind her back. “You have to buy them from me.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
