She still couldn\u2019t think what to say. Captive. For a month. Oddly, her mind fixed on the fact that it also meant a month\u2019s absence from school \u2014 and then something seemed to click.<\/p>\n

“Why did no one know to tell me?” There was still that colourless clarity in her voice. “Am I a secret, Isaac? A shame? You wanted \u2014 ” She cut short, to try to reimpose the lack of emotion that shattered the last word. “You didn\u2019t want to be a fling to me, so what am I to you, then?”<\/p>\n

And then her throat closed up with incipient tears, and she couldn\u2019t say anything more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Isaac looked down and frowned. \u201cIt\u2019s not you, Summer,\u201d he said, looking up at her and walking over to her. He hesitantly reached out for her hand. \u201cThey\u2019re my pack, yeah, but they aren\u2019t really my friends. I don\u2019t really have friends,\u201d he said, frowning and looking at her. \u201cI didn\u2019t tell them because it just\u2026 I don\u2019t talk about relationships or anything with them,\u201d he said, swallowing and looking her over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Summer took his hand, blinking. Tears slipped down her face, and she smeared them away with her free hand, though they kept falling.
