She tugged him down til his head rested on her shoulder and her hands linked behind his back. \u201cOh, darling,\u201d she murmured, low and sympathetic, \u201cstill so very much pain. No, I can\u2019t tell you with my gifts what you want, only that you do want.\u201d One hand stroked, gently, over the soft shirt and hard muscles of his back. \u201cIf I were to guess, I would say you want what you have always wanted. To be seen, and wanted, as you truly are. To be believed in, and desired for yourself. Oh, darling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Summer,&#8221; he breathed, like a sigh, or a word of praise, or one of relief. \u00a0He allowed his eyes to close as he inhaled that familiar scent, brought back to a time when he felt like something tethered him to the realm of the living. \u00a0Things could be like that again\u2014no, not the same. \u00a0Different, new, but still her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Allow me to go where you go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Any other time, she might have laughed, might have teased him \u2014 \u201cWhat could stop you?\u201d \u2014 but the moment was too fragile, the thing trembling between them too tenuous.<\/p>\n<p>So she simply said, \u201cYes,\u201d into his hair, voice a little choked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Feeling for a moment like he was hovering outside of the scene, like the closeness was constricting him, he pulled back. \u00a0\u201dI only mean that, it would be easier with your permission, of course. \u00a0But either way\u2026\u201d he gave her a sideways smile. \u00a0By the nine, how was he going to dig himself out of this one?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This time Summer couldn&#8217;t hold back her laugh. &#8220;Oh, of course. Darling madman.&#8221; She turned him loose, smiling still. &#8220;I&#8217;m tired, okay? I&#8217;m a lightweight, and I want to lie down and sleep.
