She shakes her head. \u201cI\u2019m not an agent. I\u2019m like you.\u201d She taps at the card. \u201cSee? Consultant. Freelancer. I don\u2019t take orders. I really do just want to look at the Tower.\u201d She twists her hands in her lap, flushing faintly and obviously embarrassed, she goes on, \u201cI only said one untrue thing. I \u2014 I was helping some people, during the lightup. Or I would have been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWhat sort of work do you do for SHIELD? My consulting for them has been hit or miss for awhile now. Fury and I never see eye to eye.\u201d Tony pulls out a menu from the other end of the table to glance over. \u201cAt least you made it back, and have your home. There will be other times to help out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI\u2019m SAR. And crowd control.\u201d She fiddles the card between her fingers. \u201cI \u2014 I helped look for you, when you were kidnapped.\u201d For something, anything to do with her hands, she puts the ID card away and pulls out her driver\u2019s license, to show the waiter when he comes, so she can order amaretto and coke.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

After ordering a drink and a basket of fries to eat while they carry on their conversation Tony quirks a brow at her. \u201cYou were a part of the SAR for that? Not an easy mission to undertake given the location. Don\u2019t think anyone would have found me had I not blasted out of there. Too many nooks and crannies in the mountains to be able to search effectively. On the upside I\u2019m here and not there. You weren\u2019t with the party that picked me up were you? I honestly don\u2019t remember much of the pickup and the transport to the base.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d she admits. \u201cI couldn\u2019t do it; after the first few days there wasn\u2019t enough to differentiate you from most of the rest of the folk in the area \u2014 and there was so much area.\u201d She sighs, closes her eyes. \u201cI\u2019m not the Professor; I can\u2019t get a sense of you from someone else. Sitwell found you.\u201d She sounds a little disappointed. \u201cI should have been able to do more. Anyway, Colonel Rhodes wouldn\u2019t let me come along once they\u2019d located you; said we\u2019d done enough already.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t get a fix. Not without having met you before.\u201d Her eyes open, haunted. \u201cThere are so many pockets of people there, confused, compelled, hurting. I couldn\u2019t pick you out. Not \u2014 I failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With drink set before him Tony wraps his hand around the glass, drawing it towards him as he eyes her across the table. \u201cSo you\u2019re a telepath then? Or akin to that?\u201d He pauses a moment then adds, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing anyone could have done back then; don\u2019t beat yourself up about it. It\u2019s the past and won\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Not as good as a telepath. I’m just an empath.” She stirs her drink with the straw before chasing one of the condensation droplets with a fingertip. “You really believe that. That’s … impressive, really. A couple years on and I can’t forgive myself, but you just — ” She shrugs. “Anyway. That’s the sort of thing I do, that and crowd control. It doesn’t take much to keep panic from overwhelming people.” Hooking the straw to one side with a finger, she takes a long draught of the amaretto.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
