Victor smiled as they sat at a park bench, enjoying the outside air. There was a wonderful, crisp breeze floating through the air and Victor was truly appreciating having Summer next to him, spending the day together. He turned his head when he saw what looked like a determined middle-aged man walking towards them. Normally, he would\u2019ve thought nothing of it, but the breeze blew the sharp, musty scent of dog into his face. Victor bared his teeth and sat a little straighter. The man approached them with a nervous stride.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDerrian Smith?\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor perked up, \u201cYeah, who\u2019s asking?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The man shifted his weight, \u201cErick Jacobson sent me, he said you fix problems pretty good, even if you are a vamp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor stood up and growled a bit, \u201cThen Erick should\u2019ve told you tha\u2019 you need t\u2019 make an appointment. I don\u2019 like \u2018walk-ins\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Summer had been lying across the bench, head in Victor\u2019s lap and eyes closed. She\u00a0probably wouldn\u2019t have even paid the approaching person any mind at all if Victor\u2019s spike of aggression hadn\u2019t caught her attention. It wasn\u2019t like when they were playing bedroom games; this had a real edge to it, and she opened her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

She sat up when Victor stood up, keeping her expression cool despite the increasing tension in the air. One arm looped about her knees, she looked the petitioner over. He practically dripped nervousness, though she couldn\u2019t tell if it was from approaching a vampire, or from what he wanted from the vampire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rather than interfere in Victor\u2019s business, though, she stayed silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI-I heard from him that you helped him with his rogue vampire problem a few years back. Said you did real good an\u2019 I have a problem of my own with another rogue. He\u2019s been terrorizin\u2019 our pack for the past 6 months.\u201d The other man fidgeted, obviously scared of Victor and very uncomfortable with asking a vampire for help.<\/p>\n

Victor\u2019s hands twitched into fists for a second. \u201cI\u2019m with someone, right now an\u2019 like I said, you can make an appointment jus\u2019 like Erick did. I don\u2019t take kindly to my work following me when I\u2019m out an\u2019 about.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other man\u2019s eyes drifted over Summer and Victor quickly stood in front of Summer, a low growl\u00a0erupting\u00a0from his throat. \u201cAn\u2019 gawking at my mate doesn\u2019t help your case either.\u201d \u00a0Victor\u2019s body language practically shouted at the other man to leave but the other man visibly broke down. \u201cLook, we really need help, I mean, I\u2019m asking you, a vampire for Christ\u2019s sake!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Summer reached out to brush Victor’s elbow. “Hear him out, before he draws attention to us.” They would have to talk about his protectiveness some other time. Right now, she just wanted this intruder to go away, and the fastest way to make that happen was to find out what he wanted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
