Summer sighed, and let him go. \u201cRelax, Jarvis. Remember what I am. I won\u2019t do anything you don\u2019t want.\u201d She pressed her lips together. \u201cI\u2019ll \u2014 why don\u2019t you escort me upstairs, as usual,\u201d she threw a quirk of a smile upward, \u201cand we\u2019ll see what Tony has to say to me. After that, I think \u2014 let me take you out to see the world the way we see it, Jarvis. Please.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt is not your intentions that concern me,\u201d Jarvis replied, folding his arms over his chest, \u201cbut I\u2019ve never hugged anyone or been hugged before.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2026strange.\u201d\u00a0 It was also strange having to find the words to say something, rather than simply saying what he needed to say without needing to organize it first.\u00a0 He gestured for her to follow him towards the elevator.\u00a0 \u201cI won\u2019t object to that.\u00a0 So far the most I\u2019ve seen was on the car ride from the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Her phone rang as they were emerging from the elevator. Checking the caller id, she said, \u201cOh, it\u2019s dad, I have to take this. I\u2019ll catch up, go on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summer put the phone up to her ear and said hello. Then she froze, and said nothing else for a long minute, colour draining out of her face. \u201cYeah, yeah okay. Tomorrow. Yeah. No, go ahead without me. I\u2019ll \u2026 be there. No, no, I\u2019ll be okay. I\u2019m not alone. Are you \u2014 okay. No, I promise. I\u2019m not alone, dad, I\u2019ll be okay. I love you too. Bye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand dropped, and she swallowed hard. \u201cJarvis?\u201d Summer\u2019s voice came out ragged, somehow empty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jarvis kept walking for a moment, until he heard her tone change, and he peered over his shoulder at her again, before making his way back to her side as she hung up.\u00a0 \u201cMiss Summer?\u201d he questioned, some concern creeping into his voice as he set a hand on her shoulder and asked, \u201cIs everything alright?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He supposed it rather obviously wasn\u2019t, but that was just the first thing that had come out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Her gaze was wide and blank, unfocussing. &#8220;My grandfather is dead.&#8221; Even less tone marked these words, as if she barely knew what she was saying. Then she blinked, once, and tears slid down her cheeks. Summer&#8217;s face worked, and mechanically she shoved the phone back into her pocket before both hands came to cover her face and she made a horrid half-muffled wail.
