Tony listened intently, letting her get everything out in the open. He stood when she started back\u00a0pedaling. \u201cHey, it\u2019s fine. Really,\u201d he said, hoping he sounded as convincing as he was trying to. \u201cI honestly don\u2019t get society\u2019s obsession with trying to\u00a0fix\u00a0<\/em>people. People that don\u2019t need fixing,\u201d he continued, a slight mix of anger and fatigue washing over his face and body language. He touched her shoulder gently, not knowing what else to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing yourself, in the long run, matters most. You\u2019re stuck with you<\/em>\u2026 Everyone else can come and go but at the end of the day\u2026\u201d He shrugged.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cLook at us both. Wound up in the way other people see us.\u201d Summer\u2019s laugh was a little broken. She laid her own hand atop Tony\u2019s, squeezing a little.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I don\u2019t know about you, but I really want to stop thinking about all this. Can I drag you out for some food somewhere? Maybe go down the harborside and just walk for a while? We\u2019ve rummaged around in each other\u2019s emotions all unintentionally; maybe we could find out what the other one is like aside from all that.\u201d A blush crept up her cheeks. \u201cThat is, if you want to spend time with a shattered character like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Tony\u2019s laugh was dry, and he smiled wryly. \u201cThat\u2019s us, I guess.\u201d He thought for a moment, trying to remember when he last ate, and shrugged again agreeably. He\u2019d started drinking on an empty stomach, but he couldn\u2019t remember if he\u2019d actually eaten that day or not. \u201cI could go for something to eat\u2014my treat, of course\u2014and then we\u2019ll see how we feel, okay? As long as you<\/em> can deal with a sarcastic, self-obsessed character like myself,\u201d he said teasingly, a softer smile finding his features.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Dear me, however shall I manage?” she snarked right back. “What do you mean ‘your treat of course’?” Her tone went plummy and falsely arrogant as she went on, “I am not accustomed to taking charity from strange men!
