Larke shook his head, suddenly feeling incredibly stupid. \u201cNo, Miss. I haven\u2019t tried that,\u201d he chuckled nervously. \u201cDidn\u2019t even occur to me\u2026 Perhaps I should. I hope it isn\u2019t far\u2026 I have an appointment, you see, and\u2026\u201d He shook his head again. \u201cIt\u2019s not important. Would you happen to have the time?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pulling out her smartphone, Summer glanced down at it. \u201cIt\u2019s almost 2:30.\u201d Cocking her head to the side, she regarded Larke with a narrowed gaze. \u201cI can help you out a bit better than that, then, although I warn you, if this is some kind of confidence trick, you\u2019re like to regret it. Come on, I\u2019ll drive you and make the gps figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cConfidence trick?\u201d he scoffed, furrowing a brow. \u201cI\u2019m not sure what you\u2019re implying, Miss Summer, but it would be an insult to my honor. It\u2019s a bit denting that I come off as the sort of man to-\u201d he trailed off frustratedly before straightening his posture. \u201cIt\u2019s quite alright, miss. I think I\u2019ll hail the cab, if that would suit you. I\u2019d hate to impose myself or be an inconvenience of any kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHey! I wasn\u2019t trying to be insulting! A girl has to be careful in the city, that\u2019s all. But you seem a trustworthy sort.\u201d She shrugged, glancing away. \u201cBut if you\u2019re going to be that way, I \u2026 wish you good luck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Always with my big mouth, she thought dully. I try to make a joke, and it just falls flat on its face.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. Now he seemed to have pissed off, or at least put off, a total stranger. \u201cI understand, Miss,\u201d he admitted with a nod. \u201cSketchy folks around here. If I were you, I\u2019d be a bit more careful who I offered car rides to,\u201d he said more quietly, glancing around at other park denizens.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
