Summer swallowed hard. And then again. \u201cExcuse me,\u201d she said faintly, turning away slightly. She cupped her hands, and a flame grew inside her palms, flickering against her face and filling the room with the smell of fire. A single tear tracked down her face as she closed her eyes.<\/p>\n

When she reopened them, the fire vanished. Apparently without self-consciousness, she smeared the tearstain from her face and turned back to Loki. Clearing her throat, she said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, where was I?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Loki didn\u2019t flinch at the fire\u2014he knew it burned, but he kept his eyes on the cat and his hands clasped tightly in his lap.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026cats are trusting,\u201d he said, in answer to her question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cBut you\u2019re not. Are you. Not even of a cat.\u201d Summer held out a finger, and Helios arched his neck, sniffing at it. She scrupulously kept her gaze away from Loki\u2019s, and her voice was very soft. \u201cAre you going to let yourself love Cat? Because if you aren\u2019t, you need to find him someone who will. I,\u201d she drew a deep breath, and her voice hitched, \u201cdon\u2019t know what I just saw. I \u2014 \u201c<\/p>\n

She broke off and swore, vehemently, for thirty seconds, putting her face in her hands. \u201cI don\u2019t even know what to say to you!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Loki picked Helios up in very gentle hands and placed the cat on Summer\u2019s knee, then rose.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026I should go. \u00a0Cat will be shredding my pillow about now\u2014he does that when he\u2019s annoyed with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“You think I’m just going to let this go,” she muttered into her hands. “You think I can<\/em> let this go.” Summer stood up to place a hand on Loki’s arm. “Let me be your friend.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
