Summer dropped the doughnut like it burned her and hit herself in the forehead. \u201cDon\u2019t you two even talk?\u201d she said, under the hand. \u201cGood grief, Jane. Look, I\u2019m not going to say this to hurt you, but seriously, I never thought of you as a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Summer dropped her hand and looked into Jane\u2019s eyes, her face very serious. \u201cYou\u2019re not doing yourself any favours being afraid. You say he\u2019s sincere and honest and wonderful, so hold on to that and be honest back to him.\u201d She leaned back in the chair, arms folded. \u201cYou\u2019re serious about him, right? Do it right from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jane raised an eyebrow. \u201cI am not<\/em> a coward,\u201d she said. \u201cWe talk all the time, but we talk about things that are a bit more pressing than sex. He\u2019s got enough to worry about without worrying about literally breaking me.\u201d She rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more complicated than that, okay? And besides, I\u2019m not in any rush, and neither is he. It\u2019s not like we haven\u2019t done it just because we\u2019re both nervous. It feels\u2026 I don\u2019t know. It feels right taking things slow with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Summer rolled her eyes right back. \u201cI didn\u2019t say jump right into bed. I said be honest. If you talk about everything, then let everything include why you think he might be offended. Or ask him why he thinks you might be offended.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJane, I\u2019m really serious about this. I \u2014 you\u2019re my friend, and I don\u2019t want to see you hurt because the two of you fumbled around trying \/not\/ to hurt each other.\u201d Summer looked away, at the city skyline, her mouth crimping. \u201cI tried that. I won\u2019t let what happened to me, happen to you. I just won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jane smiled, her expression sort. \u201cSummer. Trust me, that\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d she said. \u201cI know I probably made it sound like the two of us never talk, but\u2026 like I said, it\u2019s just.. it\u2019s complicated.\u201d She shrugged. They talked, but they also just sort of had a lot of silent understandings of each other. They\u2019d been that way since the beginning. It was why they worked together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened to you, though?\u201d She raised an eyebrow, suddenly curious. She didn\u2019t know much of anything about Summer\u2019s personal life outside of what she\u2019d known in high school.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“I fell in love,” Summer said lightly, blinking a few times before looking back at Jane. “I fell in love, and they never loved me back. And I always knew.
