Just to protect yourself.\u201d Her mouth curled in a one-sided smile. \u201cWhat do you want to tell, darlin\u2019? What\u2019s so hard to carry you resort to drinkin\u2019 and a smart-mouthed firechild?\u201d<\/p>\n

She set the glass aside and rose to stand immediately before him, looking up the foot of difference. Very close. \u201cWhat are you running from? Tell Summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Something in her countenance made Loki shiver slightly. \u00a0That would not do.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope you are aware, darling<\/em>, I would not need you intoxicated first to kill you.\u201d \u00a0He smiled then, throwing the force of his contrasting dispositions upon her. \u00a0Know thyself<\/em>. \u00a0That ought to do it.<\/p>\n

He silently considered her offer; he could pour out his troubles, watch them suffocate and burn her, and be rid of them. \u00a0Or perhaps he would never truly be free, no matter how many he hurt with his own pain. \u00a0\u201dI could not trouble you with such things,\u201d he murmured, \u201cBut if I did, you would be in danger from more than just the pain of your\u2026abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Amazingly, she laughed. It was a small, bitter kind of laugh, but it was a laugh. \u201cYou would not be the first to say so, and likely not the last, either. You offered your secrets. I\u2019ll dance with danger if that\u2019s what it takes to numb your pain.\u201d Turning around to sit back down (he could see the full knee-length fall of her hair, and nothing else), she added, \u201cOr any other kind of dance you like. If that\u2019s what it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou asked me what I run from,\u201d he spoke finally, pausing to take a drink. \u00a0\u201dI run from Thanos. \u00a0He does not want me dead, he wants me tortured\u2026slowly\u2026horribly. \u00a0He caught me once, not very long ago. \u00a0I had a taste of his plans before I escaped. \u00a0I know I would not be so lucky a second time\u2026\u201d his voice was catching and his breath was coming faster, so he stopped to compose himself. \u00a0He would not let his eyes fall on Summer again; she was hardly less intimidating, though in a much different manner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Ah.” The syllable was almost inaudible, her eyes wide and unfocused. When Loki fell silent, she blinked, and a few tears rolled down her face. Her fingers flexed.<\/p>\n
