Summer snickered. \u201cOkay, I did that on purpose. Sorry.\u201d She closed her hand, and the flame disappeared. \u201cRemember how I used to be able to tell how people were feeling, back then? It \u2026 got worse. It actually started to be physically painful. I, um, it almost drove me into convulsions for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

She rubbed her hands together, staring at them, before picking up another doughnut. \u201cTo this day, I swear to you, I don\u2019t remember how I figured out how to fix it. I just \u2026 called fire, one day. And the pain stopped. It was like \u2026 I burned off the foreign emotions. Literally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Summer didn\u2019t look at Jane, and her voice fell a little. \u201cFor what I just did, with you \u2014 sorry about that, by the way \u2014 I don\u2019t have to burn it off. But it\u2019s a balance \u2014 I take too much in, and I have<\/em> to call fire, or there\u2019s pain. It has to go somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI figured I might as well try to do something good with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fine, seriously. I\u2019ve seen crazier things, believe it or not,\u201d Jane said, and chuckled. \u201cBut that\u2019s\u2026 wow. That\u2019s really something.\u201d It was almost hard to believe that people like Jane or Layla or Charles existed; people with powers that were just natural to them. She was used to Thor, but he wasn\u2019t from his realm, and Bruce, but his had been artificial.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you met Layla Ford?\u201d she asked. \u201cShe\u2019s a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. She\u2019s an empath, too. I don\u2019t know how well-known that is, but she doesn\u2019t usually hesitate to tell anyone.\u201d She shrugged, taking another bite from her doughnut. \u201cYou guys would probably get along.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u2019d at least have something in common, right?<\/p>\n
