Isaac shrunk back, curling into a ball against the wall. He wasn\u2019t entirely sure what was going on himself\u2026. Fear and pain poisoned his body as he tried his best not to cry. After hearing a familiar voice he glanced up \u201cNo-he\u2019ll hurt you! D-Don\u2019t\u201d It was no use, she was already stood between the scared wolf and this brute of a man. Isaac felt a tear escape down his cheek as the man grabbed\u00a0the girl, tossing her to the floor in one, effortless motion.

She hit the ground hard, breath jolting out of her, and a hand clamped to her aching shoulder. It took her a moment to struggle to her feet, but it\u2019s amazing how much energy rage can give you. It felt like her skin was burning, and her muscles were so tense it hurt. \u201cI said,\u201d she grated, \u201cdon\u2019t \/touch\/ him.\u201d There\u2019s a trick she used to be able to do, in high school, becoming dead weight, grounding herself so firmly to the earth even burly football players couldn\u2019t move her.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Isaac pulled himself off the floor, limping to stand by her side. The stranger glared at her, a knife propped neatly in his hand \u201cWell, miss, you don\u2019t know the full story\u2026do you know what<\/em> your friend is?\u201d he asked, smirking at Isaac \u201cBecause he\u2019s far from worth saving, I can tell you that!\u201d <\/p>\n

Isaac hung his head after the hunter\u2019s comment, \u201cI don\u2019t deserve to die\u2026\u201d he mumbled in a muffled voice \u201cIs that so?\u201d the hunter smirked, tossing the knife in Isaac\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Maybe it was the offhanded denigration and the way Isaac just took it, or the casual throwing of the knife — or simply the hunter’s assumption that being any kind of supernatural creature made one worthless. “You know nothing,” she said, voice low and controlled. She touched Isaac’s arm, pulling his pain away, and added, “You never asked what I was.”<\/p>\n

It felt like something broke open inside her, tearing its way to the surface, and as she lunged for the hunter, fire burst from her hands.\u00a0”I know exactly what he is,” she snarled, breathing rough. “He is my \/friend\/.
