Derek snarled lowly but kept his head down as he was transferred to the person that bought him, seeing a small female form before him now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The key hung there from her hand, as she listened to him calmly. When he wound down, she let it go, sliding back out of sight behind fabric. \u201cI can\u2019t buy your loyalty with your freedom, then, hm?\u201d She clasped her hands back together, eyes flicking to gaze out the window as they left the city behind abruptly.<\/p>\n

“I \u2026 your kind aren\u2019t the only preternatural creatures in the world, you know. Some of us hide more easily among mundanes.” Her gaze snapped back to his. “Some of us don\u2019t hide. I\u2019m trying to change things. The laws that make it possible for us to be kept as slaves, for one. It\u2019s dangerous, and I can\u2019t keep watch in all directions at once \/and\/ do the work.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“You can\u2019t buy loyalty,” he said, teeth bared again. “It\u2019s earned. You can buy service.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

He listened with a cynical ear but understood what she meant. With a scowl out the window now he just shrugged. \u201cI told you. You can buy service. I\u2019m yours if I like it or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
