Part II: Character Information

Character Name: Shinsei Keika

keika : 'light of a firefly'; shinsei : official kanji that the family uses mean 'rebirth' or 'nascent'. Even though her given name is Keika, she calls herself Shinsei and signs her name with the kanji shi 'death' and sei 'life'.

relevancy notes: the original Saturn's name, Hotaru, means 'firefly'. Her mother's name was Keiko, I believe, which is similar in sound if not meaning. Because Saturn's powers revolve around Death and Destruction, and hence some level of rebirth as per the Eastern cycle, it makes sense for her to use the kanji of life and death in her name.

Character Position: Besides bearing the Saturn starseed, Shinsei is a final-year student at Chuo Gakuen.

Birthdate and Age: January 12 / 17

Profile
Likes:

genre: horror / Gothic -- the patently weird and absurd twists of plot appeal to Shinsei's daredevil side. Far from finding them scary or frightening, Shinsei is intrigued by Gothic novels, considering them a look into the darker side of ages past and present. It doesn't hurt that there's lots of death, often messy or strange death, in them.

song style: european techno -- the heavy, driving beats and bizzare lyrics of techno often put Shinsei into a trance, a state she often prefers over facing reality with mind fully awake and functioning. Whenever she wants to retreat from the pressures of responsibility, Shinsei turns on a disk of a group like Eiffel65.

Hamasaki Ayumi -- consonant with her enjoyment of european techno, Shinsei enjoys the music of the jpop singer Hamasaki Ayumi. Although normally Shinsei dislikes chaos, she does happen to like the often chaotic remixes Ayumi does, and defends herself in her own mind by saying that while the mixes themselves are random there is nothing random about their existence - Ayumi will always have a remix of any of her songs. For the lyrics, Shinsei likes "Endless Sorrow" best, but for beat and sound, she likes "Never Ever".

gemstone: onyx -- this black stone is often associated with death, and widows wear it in mourning the world over. It is the only gemstone Shinsei will willingly wear.

colour: purple -- the single shade that can easily be either warm or cool, the colour of royalty and the colour associated in magick with the Void and soulness - this is why Shinsei likes purple.

sunset -- sunset is the time of the sun's 'death', when the world fades into concealing darkness. But at the same time, Shinsei always has a feeling of a promise of rebirth watching the sunset, a more hopeful feeling than she has at any other time.

food: Shinsei's two favourite foods are okonomiyaki [Japanese pizza] and soba noodles. She likes okonomiyaki because of its spiciness; sometimes she tests herself to see how much wasabi she can stand on hers. Soba is just something she can eat in a hurry in between all the things she has planned.

subject: mathematics -- besides appealing to her orderly, logical mind, Shinsei prefers math to any other class because she doesn't have to talk in there; the professor rarely asks questions that have to be answered out loud.

Dislikes:

genre: fantasy -- Shinsei is a very down-to-earth person, and she finds the flights of fancy key to fantasy novels just a bit offensive. She has no trouble believing in ghosts, dark forces, or other shadowy horror-type things, but unicorns, fairies, dragons, and happy shiny medieval times push her limits of the believable. Books like Alice in Wonderland don't set too well with her either.

song style: classical -- much too peaceful generally for Shinsei's taste, although there are those ones that are stirring, martial, and loud. She has this distaste set when she was young, though, and classical was used to put her to sleep. Being put to sleep just annoys her in general.

food: milk -- Shinsei is extremely tired of being told to "drink her milk so she can be strong" and hearing old obaasans say that she should drink more milk. Consequently, she has concieved a dislike for the white stuff.

subject: PE / English -- PE class bothers her because their uniforms show more areas of skins than she is happy with, which means all and sundry can see her scars, and she's extremely sensitive about people seeing her scarred body. English bothers her because learning a foreign language usually means speaking it out loud, and that means she either has to speak slowly and risk being thought slow or stupid, or she has to speak fast and wind up stuttering.

cars -- Shinsei is slightly claustrophobic, and the feeling of being shut up in a moving vehicle is often more than she can stand. To her, being in a closed vehicle means being cut off from the world around her, unable to sense or handle anything that might happen. ... of course, part of this is an entirely understandable holdover from the car accident her mother was killed in.

Hobbies:

Sun Sign: Capricorn

relevancy notes: not only was this Hotaru's sign and the sign governed by Saturn -_-;, it is also the sign most closely associated with Death, due to the placement of Midwinter during its reign. Midwinter was the celebration of the death and rebirth of the sun in many ancient religions.

Bad Habit: stuttering -- Shinsei stuttered as a small child, and after the accident the problem only grew worse. Now she can barely speak at all without stuttering, and the family doctor says there's little help for it; the problem became hardwired into her brain after the accident. He calls it a species of trauma.

Appearance

general : Shinsei has a heartshaped face characterised by high cheekbones, an extremely stubborn chin and a decidedly hawklike nose, indicating some distinctly unJapanese blood in her ancestry. Neither pretty nor handsome, Shinsei's natural expression is rather blank and emotionless. She perpetually looks slightly unhappy or detatched, and smiles or rare laughter barely soften her naturally harsh expression. On rare occasions, she can break out with a smile of such blinding joy that her face is completely transformed.

Shinsei is extremely tall for a girl. At 5'11", she tops even the height of many guys she knows. A muscular build, kept fit by her active hobbies, enhances the ambiguous aura she gives off. She lacks grace, and tends to move in an almost predatory way, keeping very still until the actual moment of movement and then moving with extreme abruptness. Her skin is naturally pale, and she sunburns often and easily, much to her dismay. Her arms, shoulders, chest, and upper legs are crossed with the marks of myriad scars, some more distinct than others but most readily visible in normal light.

hair : Shinsei's hair colour is a dark purple, struck through with paler highlights. It falls to about the bottom of her shoulder blades and curls softly. Due to her hobbies and preferred image, she keeps it pinned back in a severe bun, allowing no strands of hair to escape. This makes the sharp lines of her face seem even harsher. When she lets it loose, it falls about her face in waves that gentle her severe expression considerably.

eyes : Naturally somewhat narrow and parted by that birdbeak of a nose, Shinsei's eyes draw little attention -- until one gets close enough to see their colour. Shinsei's eyes are a remarkable silver-gilt shade. Too pale to be labeled blue, gold, or even grey, in artificial light they can seem almost white. Natural lighting brings shifting shadows of colour to them, like the surface of an opal. She has barely any eyebrows at all, but thick, dark, short eyelashes shade her eyes usually.

clothing : Shinsei wears black. If it's not black, next to her pale skin it looks black. Dark purple, midnight blue, forest green, deep maroon ... she will wear them but rarely and usually as accents. The sole exception to this monochromatic scheme is her school uniform. But while she will wear the uniform in the assigned colours, she did win the battle to be allowed to wear the winter uniform year-round. Shinsei refuses, even in hot weather, to wear short sleeves, short skirts, or shorts. Her arms, legs, chest, and body from neck to feet are hidden by clothing at all possible times. If she has to wear a skirt shorter than ankle length, she will wear hose. Black hose.

Shinsei cannot wear earrings of any kind in mundane form. Her body rejects them. Her body rejects any foreign material, actually, including earrings and contact lenses. She wears no rings and on formal occasions only will put on a silver chain with a wirewrapped onyx.

Personality:

Shinsei possesses a somewhat reserved, very independent personality, but one that is well concealed by the quiet and outstanding image that is shown to the world. She bluffs the appearance of being sure of herself and her purposes. Actually, her self-assurance is very thin indeed. She progresses best in activities in which the rules of the game are well established and decisions play a minimal part in the evaluation of success.

Ambitious, serious and dedicated to duty, life is difficult, but Shinsei is the type of person who will triumph and achieve success. Her aptitude to persevere, no matter how difficult the road, sets her apart from most of her peers. Her patience is never ending. Shinsei is a very serious person, thinking everything through carefully before she sets off in any direction. She can be counted on to select options that are both practical and that provide an economic advantage. Her attitude is conservative; her philosophy is waste not, want not.

She is especially well suited to business and government because of her sense of organization and structure. She is the quintessential careerist, taking job and duties very seriously. Therefore, Shinsei is never one to shirk responsibility and has very little use for those that do. That which matters most to her is her public image. She shows her best face to the public. She is loyal and dedicated, and she demands utter loyalty and dedication from her comrades.

Shinsei's intensity and ability to focus can cancel out her inherent pessimism, and her logical thoughts enable her to anticipate almost any problem. This creates a tendency for others to see her as more optimistic than she really is. She can be unconcerned about, sometimes even ruthless toward, those getting in her path as she moves upward.

She can't handle chaotic situations well. She needs to lighten up a little and not take life and everything else so seriously. Shinsei has no sense of humour and tends to take everything that's said or done at face value. Although she is self-disciplined, responsible, and practical in the extreme, at times she wallows in self-pity, often forgetting that her most important asset is self-esteem. Rigidity and fear of change are a huge problem.

She is well-endowed mentally, possessing a logical, systematic, analytical and discriminating mind and a superb memory. In all emotional matters she appears careful and controlled. Her real strength comes out when she is allowed to focus her capacity for concentration on a single objective. Shinsei is a goal oriented individual, with a long-range outlook and philosophical attitude. Her ambitions are geared to those long-range and large-scale goals.

She has a need to experience life as fully as possible as fast as possible. True emotions frighten her, being chaotic and difficult to deal with, and in order to convince herself that she can feel she tends to seek out activities and situations that provide a thrill, without forcing her to involve herself in messy human relationships. At times she names herself the "Harbinger of Death" and tends to tell her concerned siblings, "I'm not supposed to feel."

Shinsei is a very direct person. Her speech, when she speaks [which is rare], is blunt and to the point, lacking in tact and diplomacy. To be fulfilled, she needs a constant challenge and goal. She tends to take everything and everyone for granted. She doesn't like dealing with pessimistic or emotional people, and she doesn't want the burden of dealing with their problems. Shinsei doesn't even like dealing with her own problems, ignoring them with the attitude that she doesn't acknowledge these situations, they will go away. She is afraid of disappointment and sometimes that clouds her vision. With her slightly pessmistic point of view, her outlook won't become jaded by time or turmoil.

Shinsei's private side is very different from her public side. In private she can be shy and sensitive. The intensity of her public image disappears, replaced by a certain diffidence. Alone, or with her siblings, she often broods, and will allow herself to feel, occasionally to extremes. Emotionally demanding relationships are very difficult for her, and she is unsure of herself in intimate situations. She depends almost completely on her family for the stability and safety she requires in order to present that intense yet serene face to the public.

History:

Shinsei Soseiki and Hiromi had, from the beginning, what many would consider a perfect romance. Born and raised in Kyoto, friends for years and romantically interested in each other long before they made their love public, everyone agreed that the pair belonged together. Hiromi would be the perfect housewife for preoccupied physics researcher Soseiki, and their life would by idyllic.

And for nearly ten years it was. Soseiki distinguished himself mildly in his teaching at Kansai Gaidai, an international college in Oosaka, and discovered an ability to minister to lost gaijin teens that he shared with his wife. Three years after their marriage Hiromi gave birth to twins, which they named Araumi (the girl) and Arashi (the boy). The birth was easy, and both parents expressed a desire to have more children. Four years later, after a number of complications (most of them involving Soseiki being away from home for long periods of time), the couple had another baby, a single girl this time, whom they named Keika.

From the start, Keika was something of a trial to her everloving parents -- she was a very quiet baby. After the twins, who were loud almost to a fault when young, Keika seemed abnormally quiet for a small child. The pediatricians assured Hiromi this was untrue, and every child was different. Keika learned to talk late, and both lisped and stuttered at the start. The lisp vanished with the appearance of her teeth, but the stutter persisted. Keika learned to deal with it, and in time was ready to start school.

Then tragedy struck. Japanese parents who want their children to get into the very best schools often have to subject their children to testing even before entering elementary school, and it was upon returning with Keika from one such test that disaster afflicted the Shinsei family. It was raining, a not uncommon occurence in Oosaka, and Hiromi neglected to take appropriate precautions, being something of a hotshot driver.

As a result, the car with Hiromi and Keika hit a patch of oilslicked water, skidded across the width of the four lane street, was impacted in the rear by an oncoming vehicle, and smashed against a telephone pole on the opposite side of the street. Keika was wearing a seatbelt, and received numerous cuts from the broken glass of the windshield, plus whiplash, a concussion, and a severe shock.

Hiromi was not.

Hiromi was thrown through the windshield and broke her neck hitting first the pole and then the sidewalk. Keika managed to scramble through the back seat and out the back doors, earning more cuts in the process, but intent on reaching her mother. With her mother's head cradled between her six-year-old hands, Shinsei Keika watched her mother bleed to death on a busy Oosaka street. As she would tell the story later, "I remember feeling that there was something I could do about the problem. I felt that if I had only known what to do, my mother might have lived long enough for the ambulance to get there."

While Keika never precisely blamed herself, the accident marked the beginning of her determined insistence on self-sufficiency and emotional withdrawal. She hurled herself into schoolwork as a distraction from constantly reliving the incident in her memories, and her young mind bounced back fairly rapidly. The nightmares ceased in short order, and Keika apparently rather easily adapted to the absence of mother in her life.

To her close family, however, there was always a suspicion that Keika wasn't nearly as mentally stable as she seemed. Their suspicions were confirmed when her stutter worsened, and at the age of ten she began to insist upon being called Shinsei and on writing the name with the kanji for 'death' and 'life'. At that point, Arashi and Araumi took a much more involved interest in their little sister's life, and made strenuous efforts to draw her out of the shell she was increasingly withdrawing into.

In part, they succeeded. Shinsei became increasingly close to her brother Arashi, and while she did not give up her intensive dedication to schoolwork, she ceased totally repressing her emotions and began to allow herself to care more freely again. But Soseiki knew with a sort of despair that the fatal accident had not only taken his beloved wife, but stolen the true childhood of their youngest daughter, for Shinsei had mentally matured much more rapidly than normal.

When Shinsei prepared to enter high school and the twins, Chuo University, she begged her father to allow her to test for the prestigious Chuo Gakuen, the highschool near the university. In a rare display of emotion, she threatened to run away if she wasn't allowed to be near her adored siblings. The professor threw up his hands and gave in. Shinsei passed the exams and entered Chuo Gakuen in the same year that the twins entered Chuo Daigaku.

In the fall of that year, Arashi began to encourage his little sister to attend the motor races he enjoyed. She quickly learned to love them as well, and her passion for dangerous sports was born in an instant. The following spring the pair invested in a racing motorbike and began to seriously train. Arashi joined Chuo's motor sports club and the duo entered several races. They quickly became Chuo Daigaku's third ranked team and a solid competitor in Tokyo's race scene.

Currently, Shinsei is in her final year at Chuo Gakuen, preparing to enter Chuo Daigaku in the spring. The twins are also final-year students, and Arashi and Shinsei still love to race together. Soseiki still teaches physics and ministers to gaijin in his spare time in Oosaka, and none of them have any idea that Shinsei's life is about to be turned upsidedown.

Part III: Soldier Information

Special Skills:

stealth

Shinsei doesn't talk. Often. She even whispers her attacks. She also wears black. She could easily be mistaken for a spy in her black sneakiness. It's not that she consciously plans to be sneaky or stealthy, but her natural attributes of quiet speech and predatory movement, plus her preferred colour of black, contribute to her uncanny ability to have been seen in one place and five seconds later be somewhere else entirely. She's mistress of popping up and scaring the whozis out of you, or being right there by your elbow exactly when you need her without you seeing her coming.

mad phat speed

Perhaps the slightly incorrect term for this praticular ability, but Shinsei, due to her extensive motorcycle racing, can get just about anywhere in Tokyo in a very short time. She can cut corners, slalom down curvy roads and around traffic jams, and crowd-dodge with ease and nary an accident. She almost never gets a speeding ticket and knows the roads and byways of Tokyo as well as she knows the scars on her body. Her best speeds are achieved in her own motorbike, of course, but given about five minutes she can familiarise herself with any other openair vehicle enough to achieve respectable speeds with it.

dedication / focus / concentration

These three terms basically equate to the same thing: Shinsei has massive dedication. Her concentration is like a brick wall, and you can hammer at it for a while before you break it. When she focuses on something, she tunes the rest of the world out. This is how she gets when listening to Ayumi or techno, very focused. When she's given a mission, she's the same way: nothing will stand in the way of her completing that mission; she's completely dedicated to that one thing. Multitasking is not something she is any good at; but given a single task she will bend all her considerable willpower on it. And probably be finished in half the time, too.

power channel

Sailorsaturn is arguably the sailor soldier who can channel the most raw power. The actual power granted by the starseed of Saturn is of a medium level, falling above most of the Lunarians but below the Terrans and Galactics. However, the strongest attribute of the Saturn starseed is not the level of personal power, but its granted ability to channel other forces -- namely, the galaxy-wide forces of destruction / creation. What makes Saturn's attacks so very powerful and dangerous is the fact that she is the lock and chain on a very large and untamed beast. When that lock is released by one of her attacks, the deadly power of the flip side of creation floods through the bearer of the starseed.

Unlike any other starseed, this starseed possesses the ability to destroy the world with three words [that horrific bane of reviewers and online game designers], but even though she has two different variations of this power, it comes with one HUGE caveat: destroying the world with three words means she goes too. Sailorsaturn IS the Sacrificial Soldier, the Silent Messiah, She Who Must Not Be Awakened, and a host of other silly titles that basically boil down to one thing: when she goes boom, the world goes boom with her. The purpose of her power is not random cruel destruction, however; it is drawn from the Hindu world-cycle of birth / growth / death / rebirth. Saturn represents the death part of the cycle, clearing away old, dead, and useless worlds in order for new ones to be born from the ashes.

Powers:

  1. death reborn / ribbon revolution

looks like : Sailorsaturn raises the Silence Glaive over her head with one hand, flings the other one to the sky, and whispers the words of the attack. Myriads of dark purple ribbons begin to gather about the blade and her body. The ribbons spread out everywhere in concentric waves from her body and destroy everything they come in contact with.

works like : The ribbons that appear (and form the basis for the pun in the name) are formed from Saturn's inherent destructive side. They are her spirit in tangible, malignant form, and anything, anything at all, that they touch will be destroyed, disintegrating into its component parts. Because the force of the attack actually comes from her physical body, by the end of the attack (when the world has been destroyed if she is not stopped) Saturn dies from depletion.

  2. silence glaive surprise

looks like : Sailorsaturn whispers the attack words, and raises the Glaive over her head with both hands, getting ready to slam it down on the ground. As she brings it down, a huge wave of destructive force emanates out from the blade, as though the very air displaced by the movement of the blade carries the force of death. When / if the blade hits the ground, an enormous concussive shockwave is transmitted through the entire earth, triggering its disintegration.

works like : A much more powerful version of death reborn revolution, silence glaive surprise takes much less from Saturn in the way of execution; by the time she can wield this attack she has learned to call on the power of destruction, the dark side of creation, within everything. Thus she pulls the colossal amount of power necessary for this attack from everything around her, as opposed to generating it within herself as before. This makes her merely the channel, and there is NO controlling that power. However, like before, the ultimate price for completion of this attack is her death, which effectively closes the conduit and ends the destruction. By the time she dies as a result of using the attack, though, it will already be too late.

There is only one reliable method of preventing either of these attacks from causing horrendous destruction, and that is to somehow stop her before the manoeuvre is completed. Disrupting her concentration, which both attacks require intensively, taking the Glaive away from her, preventing its contact with the ground, or any other physical method of disruption work best. Persons standing in the centre of the attack-field with Saturn have a 75% chance of surviving the initial destruction; but if either attack is completed it is unlikely that anything living will survive the end.
However, although the spirit of Shinsei Keika will undoubtedly urge the use of either attack very strongly in many situations where it is not required, given her particular mindset, the Saturn starseed is imbued with a level of caution and calculated planning that far surpasses any normal human, and will not be coerced by the importunings of Shinsei's frail human spirit. Sailorsaturn will never use either of these attacks frivolously or futilely. She is the Sacrificial Soldier, the port of last resort, and she will not wield her awesome power until absolutely necessary.

  3. silence wall

looks like : Sailorsaturn makes of herself a physical shield for those she is protecting before invoking this power. She holds the Glaive between herself and whatever power she wishes to deflect and whispers the words. A transparent bubble forcefield appears, emanating from the point where her hands grasp the Glaive.

works like : The initial effect, as the power is being invoked, is that of the Glaive dividing the force Saturn is protecting against. When the forcefield springs into being, the force must cascade around the field until it either overpowers the field or the field is broken from the inside. This may occur by breaking Saturn's concentration, knocking the Glaive from her hands, or knocking her down. The silence wall can take an incredible amount of power before it is overwhelmed, and since part of its power is derived from Saturn's determination to shield her comrades / friends, its strength can be variable. This is the single power Saturn wields that takes its power from her creative, healing side.

Practically, the silence wall can withstand two minutes of full force pure power attacking. It can absorb or deflect any given level of attack by any other starseed except that of a Royal wielding a Crystal, which falls under the previous statement. While this defense is extremely powerful in the way of deflecting powerful attacks, its duration is correspondingly short.

Much of Saturn's skill in wielding her powers depends on the spirit of the holder of the starseed and not the starseed itself. While the inherent qualities of the starseed lean it toward Death and Destruction more than Healing and Rebirth, how much that quality comes out depends upon the holder, who may lean more toward Healing and Rebirth, thus lending those attacks / defenses dependent on that side greater power. A spirit who tends toward Death and Destruction will correspondingly have greater facility with the attacks / defenses utilising that side of the Saturn starseed. Therefore, since Shinsei's inner tendencies are toward Death and Destruction, she wields greater power in the two destructive attacks and less power in the single protective defense. This is as compared to Hotaru, who was in many respects more balanced between the two sides and thus commanded all her attacks with generally equal facility.

  4. Silence Glaive (weapon)

the polearm associated with the Saturn starseed, the Silence Glaive is a 6' tall dark-metal pole with a forked, curved blade at the top. When not needed, it vanishes into gray limbo-pocketspace, to return upon summoning.

Fuku:

Sailorsaturn's fuku begins with the typical white leotard with a deep v-neck. The sleeves are what is generally referred to as flowerpetal, meaning they look like someone enclosed her arm in a simple flower. They come about an inch over her shoulders, and are also white. The collar outlining the v-neck, which looks like the collar on a sailor's uniform, is a deep cool purple, with two white stripes near the outer edge. Her skirt, which is barely long enough for decency and surmounted by a white double piping, is the same cool shade as the collar. Centred over her lower breastbone is a large bow in a shade of bloody maroon red so dark it appears black in most lights. A similar bow appears at the small of her back, possessing tails that are actually longer than the skirt and hang to mid-thigh. Around her throat is a ribbon of the purple, centred with a crystalline many-rayed star, and a matching star surmounts the bow on her chest. She wears elbow length gloves that have a triple ring of piping around the top, also in purple. Matching coloured boots are laced in front and reach nearly to her knees, resembling roller-skates, which add another two inches to her normal height of 5'11". In her earlobes are ringed planet shapes with elongated diamond shapes depending from them. A gold tiara comes to a point in the centre of her forehead, containing a single white / iridescent oval stone.

Henshin: Saturn Crystal Power makeup

Shinsei whispers her transformation trigger and extends her hand before her. In her hand appears a handle topped with a clear glass globe. The symbol of Saturn appears in it, haloed by shadow, and begins to glow brilliantly. As Shinsei spins around once completely, a line of purple circles around her, sending up waves of coruscating purple to hide her figure. When the curtain of colour slowly subsides, Sailorsaturn appears in full fuku. Her eyes are closed. The camera zooms in on a closeup as her eyes open, then zooms back out as she extends her arm up and to the side to grasp the Silence Glaive, which appears obediently. To final pose, she plants the base of the Glaive between her feet and slightly in front of her and holds it firmly centred and upright with both hands grasping it.
