“I’ve got a bit on me, don’t worry about it.” He laughed and shook his head. As if he was letting her pay. He bought their passes and waited to be allowed on, bouncing on the balls of his feet. He turned to her with a sudden look of fake hurt. “Really, Robbie? That’s the first time I’ve gotten that one.” It faded to a smirk, though.
“You didn’t have to do that; I can pay for myself. And at least your name /has/ nicknames.” She turned away, hooking elbows over the railing and gazing out across the water. The bright smile slipped from her face, leaving pensiveness and a strange sort of distance.
He just laughed and shook his head, watching the ferry dock and unload. He noticed she’d stopped smiling and he hooked his arm around her shoulders, pulling her a little closer. Forward, yes, but he liked her. “What’s on your mind, Mer?” He said it the same dopey way he had before, trying to get her to smile even if involuntarily.
She let herself be pulled into the curve of his arm. She shrugged a little, still looking across the water. “Just stuff. Nothing important.” Turning in his hold, she looked up, smiling slightly. “Don’t worry, Robert. Time to board.” She let him steer her onto the boat.
