summer by the sea

Losing her battle against laughter the way she always did when he was being adorably frustrated, Summer reached out and patted her sandy hand on his shoulder. “Maybe we should go back where the water can’t get you?”

“I have wet sand in places now…” He grimaced uncomfortably as his bottom lip jutted out into a petulant pout, eyeing her adoringly. Leaning into her touch and twisting to press his lips to hers, he nodded and moved to stand up. “Where did you have in mind?”

“Oh, I was going to leave that up to you.” She wrinkled her nose a little as she stood up. She had no sympathy for his wet sand; she had it too. Wriggling her toes in the next waves, she bent and rinsed her hands off. “You were saying something about being naughty?”

Summer reached out for a hug, bracing herself for what appeared to be a flying tackle sort of hug (the sort only she ever got from him) when he stopped. “No? I’m fine. I mean, it’s astronomy, it’s not exactly easy, but — ” She blinked up at him, slipped an arm around his waist and added, “Did Derek keep you?”

Before he could answer, or kiss her, or anything, a hurtfully familiar voice came from her. “Robbing the cradle to get your fucks, witch? Or did you figure out I warned off everybody on campus?” The speaker was tall, even taller and narrower than Isaac, with wild curly black hair and several facial piercings in his olive skin.

Summer froze, her whole body tensing up. “That’s what happened,” she muttered.

Eyeing her suspiciously then, his eyes curiously scanned her face and appearing to be relatively satisfied with her answer, Isaac nodded and curled in against her torso. Smiling as she looped an arm around the jut of his hip, he shook his head and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “No, I just slept in – silly, huh?”

He was about to move in for a proper kiss when a voice called out to distract him, his eyes flashing golden as a low growl sounded out from his slightly parted lips. “Just say the word and I’ll rip him to pieces…”

“Isaac, no.” She clutched him tightly. “Just … just ignore him.”

Coincidental with her admonishment, the other person snarled, “I’m talking to you, slut. You think you’re too good to talk to me now?”

“Jesse, please don’t,” Summer pled, pulling away from Isaac a little. “I’m leaving you alone, isn’t that what you wanted?”

“I’m not going to let you fuck over other guys the way you did me,” Jesse jeered.

On the verge of tears, she protested, “I didn’t do anything!”

“Mmmm, depends what kind of naughty — Isaac, what are you doing?” She gave him a very puzzled glance, a handful of sand balanced in the air. “You know it’s just going to seep under you, right? Or there’ll be a bigger — ” A bigger-than-usual wave broke over his hip. Biting at her lips to keep from laughing, she added, “The tide is coming in.”

“Trying to help although I might end up regretting it, because — ” Here, he paused and let out a surprised squeak as the wave lapped over the jut of his hips and he shivered as it trickled down the back of his shorts. Squirming uncomfortably at the sensation, he gazed up at her and shook his head in exasperation. “Well, that didn’t go as planned!”

Summer stacked up her notebooks and textbooks and shoved them into her bag, then checked the time on her phone. Even though it was the first day of the summer astronomy course, the professor had used the entire class period, so Isaac should be turning up outside any time now.

Which was good, because she hadn’t had any idea that Jesse had also stayed over the summer until he’d walked into the lab. They’d both looked away immediately, but she could feel his attention fixed on her, and it made her jittery. The /last/ time they’d ended up in a freshman-level course together, he had told campus security that she was stalking him, which had been its own special kind of hell.

A few months after that he had apparently decided that turn-about was fair play, and begun to actually stalk her. Or maybe she’d just gotten more sensitive to his presence — he seemed to be everywhere she went. It had been such a relief to go away to the seaside with Isaac and not have that niggling worry in the back of her mind for a few days.

She went out to the steps of the science building and perched on one of the great blocks lining the steps, keeping an eye out for Isaac and his bike. She’d put a bike rack on her car last week, just for this sort of situation, although she might take up riding her bike to campus again soon.

Cycling furiously as his blue eyes darted down to the watch strapped onto his wrist, Isaac winced and pushed himself even harder, not wanting Summer to have to wait on him for too long. He’d lost track of time – he’d slept in by accident and then taken far too long to have a long and leisurely shower followed by a series of catastrophes in the kitchen, so all in all, his day wasn’t progressing all that well.

He’d just glanced at the clock in the hallway and then cried out in surprise when he’d realised that he should have left twenty minutes ago, and now he was making up for long time by cycling faster than was humanly possible.

And as he turned the last corner and saw her waiting there by the steps, he smiled and skidded to a halt, nearly throwing his bike down to the gravel in his haste to get to her. “Sorry, I’m so sorry, I didn’t -” He stopped and tilted his head to the side, eyeing her warily. “What’s wrong? Something happened, didn’t it?”

Summer looked up, making her eyes big and round and innocent. “Is there something you want?” She tried to dig a channel from her castle’s makeshift moat to the sea, and frowned as the sides kept collapsing or melting inward. Every wave eroded a little more of the outer edges.

“Mmm, I’m not allowed to do naughty things in public, remember? People are watching,” Isaac protested with a crooked smile and fought the urge to pull her into his arms and kiss away the expression on her face. Watching as her hard work was ruined by the sea, his eyes narrowed and he lay down on the ground, attempting to arrange his body to become a barrier against the waves, allowing her to work freely.

“Stiles! Stiles, I need your help!” It was okay to ask the guy you used to like for advice on the guy you liked now, right?

“Summer! Summer, what?” He asked, matching her tone. He grinned, to make it known that he was teasing.

“He was hurt, he was angry.” She twisted her hands together. “He thought I made him love me. You weren’t very happy at the idea either, remember. And he’s not — he doesn’t know about supernatural things. Except me. He found out about that and … ” She trailed off and shrugged.

“Ah,” Stiles said, suddenly understanding where she was coming from. “Wait, is this part of the reason you’re really so afraid to see if Isaac actually likes you back?” he asked, eyebrows furrowed in thought.

“You mean, am I afraid I’m making him like me? No.” She shook her head. “No. I just … don’t … ” She let her breath out in a long sigh again. “I don’t know how to put it. Just maybe he was right. Maybe he is right.”
