“He’ll call me a liar and beat you up anyway.” Well, a liar and a lot of other hurtful things — nothing she hadn’t heard before, but standing in the face of the emotion behind it was another thing. “Now’s your time to back out, before we go inside.”

Isaac rolled his eyes. “I’d like to see him try to beat me up. I’ll kick his ass,” he mumbled, shaking his head and looking at her. “Nope, not backing out. You’re stuck with me.”

That made Summer laugh. “I’m not complaining.” With a deep breath, she added, “Let’s go face the beast.” She climbed out of the little car, squared her shoulders, and strode up the path to her apartment door. A tall, dark-haired figure slouched against the wall beside it, arms folded in a black leather coat. When she approached, he shoved himself up with one shoulder and loomed over her while she unlocked the door.
