Summer puts a bakery box on the bar at Carpe Noctem and smiles sweetly at the bartender. “Send for Vex.”

The bartender raised an eyebrow at the girl as she set a box on the counter of his bar. “You’re that Summer girl, right?” he asked absently, and then nodded as he stepped away to find his employer. Several minutes later, he returned, “Vex’ll be out momentarily.”

And several moments later, the Mesmer appeared, walking over to where Summer stood at the bar. He was dressed in his finest. “‘Ello, Precious,” he greeted, “Ya called?”

Vex had taken a seat again on the leather couch, cracking open the bottle. At her question, he shrugged, “Probably would, but I ‘aven’t ‘ad a good beer in months. Seemed worth it.” He didn’t drink beer often, had to be in the right mood, but when he did, it was expensive and delicious. “There’s wine in the fridge too, if you were interested,” he added as an after-thought.

Her eyes glittered with her low laugh. “I’m going to get drunk on you.” Summer held up the spoon in one hand and the knife in the other, then put them behind her back. “You have to buy them from me.”

Vex shrugged at that, “Fair ‘nough.” He watched as she tucked the knife and spoon behind her back, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. “And just ‘ow do you suggest I do that, Precious?” he asked in a purring voice.

She put one knee on the leather beside him. “You must have something you can offer in trade.”
