It took me a second to realize this was about my comment about “white men in groups” being a fear uniting POC, women, and LGBTQIA+ that was just an offhand comment on another post, but I still occasionally get stuff with bullshit racist or MRA commentary in response to me.
So, let me tell you a thing, as a cisbi white middle class girl who lived in West Philly: if someday, I’m out in the city late at night, and I have down the sidewalk in front of me a group of white men, and across the street, on the other sidewalk, a group of the most fucked-up media stereotype of black “thugs”? I’m going to cross the street, give a polite acknowledging nod of ‘good evening’ to the black gentlemen as I pass them, and keep walking my way.
Now, could I be maybe mugged by that group of “thugs”? Yeah, but I could be mugged by the white guys too. That tends to be far more tied with economic status than race. But am I likely to be molested, raped, assaulted, or murdered by that group of black men? Actually, no I’m not; I know my fucking statistics: I am significantly more likely to be victimized by a white man than by absolutely any other demographic. I was going to qualify this by “as a white woman I am significantly…” but then I realized it was unnecessary.
I fear a group of slightly drunk white dudes wearing J Crew/American Apparel/Ed Hardy/whatever far more than this bullshit idea of a drug using “inner-city youth”. Most people should.
