“Excuse me, Miss, what are you doing in the castle? I’ve never seen you before, so you can’t be one of the servants.”

“I — oh — what? I’m just, uh, I — ” Summer blushed and looked down. “I was leaving something for one of the knights. Sir Mordred?”

Kay nodded and asked, “And what was this something?” He didn’t like having to treat strangers coldly, especially since the woman’s blush made her seem like less of a threat, but he would do whatever he had to to protect the castle, his home.

She fidgeted with her skirts. “J-just some fruit. As a surprise?”

“Alright, and do you have this fruit with you, or is it already in his chambers?”

Her quick glance at the door gave away her answer before she opened her mouth. “I — it’s already there. I promise, it’s nothing bad, only I … ” She trailed off, blushing harder.

His face softened slightly as he replied, “I wish that I could take your word for it, but I’m going to have to check it. I’m sorry.” He honestly was sorry that he had to do this, but a stranger sneaking around late at night was incredibly suspicious. What if the fruit was poisoned?

Kay quietly slipped into the other knight’s chambers and used the moonlight shining in through the window to locate the fruit. He picked them up and checked the surfaces for any punctures, cuts, or unusual material that could indicate that poisoned blades could have put poison inside or that poison was smeared on the outside. To his relief, the fruits were whole and safe as far as he could tell. He sighed and made his way to the door, hoping to slip out without Sir Mordred noticing.

Summer fidgetted miserably in the corridor, certain that if she tried to slip off, back to the lower town, the knight would only come after her, suspicious. Or send other knights after her, none of whom would be her beloved Mordred. It would be terrible, and then Mordred would tease her for inadequate sneaking again.

Briefly she considered using her magic on the tall knight, but just as quickly dismissed it. That would be suspicious too, even if her eyes didn’t flash golden and she was very careful. Maybe if she enlisted him in her cause? He seemed like he might be receptive to the plight of young lovers …
