That earned him a sideways smile. “What do you want to know? I’m not really that interesting, really. Jut a lesser ‘costumed freak’.” Her fingers made quotes around those words. “Born in the south, here. I’m ordinary, except this one thing I can do, and that’s all.”
“You are far from ordinary or uninteresting to me, Summer.” He took a sip from his wine glass. “I suppose I would like to know whatever it is you could spare to tell me. For starters, what is this this ‘one thing’?” His eyes sparkled slightly in the low light of the restaurant, his curiosity heightening the blue of them.
“I’m an empath,” she told him, softly. “It means I can sometimes tell what others are feeling, and project my feelings, or any feelings, on to them.” She raked a hand back through her hair. “I used it a little bit bringing you here; you were all edges and nerves, so I … comforted you a little. I try not to do things like that, though.”
“That is indeed intriguing…” He mused, truly impressed. “I had no idea.” He waved his hand about the air, as if swatting away her admission. “That does not bother me. It was appreciated, I’m sure. I was able to begin to relax and enjoy all you had to show me. Thank you, truly.”
Summer blushed faintly. “Aww, you’re welcome.” She let her eyes rest on him for a moment again before looking away. “It made growing up interesting, but not obviously so. “Smart people aren’t really well thought of when they’re young, you know?” She shrugged. “My sister always had it much easier than me.”
