“Wake up,” Summer murmurs in Mordred’s ear. She kisses his cheek. “I’ve brought you breakfast, fy nhariad.”

Mordred grunts, his eyes fluttering open after a few seconds and he smiles. “Good morning” he mutters, moving into a sitting position “you didn’t have to.”

Summer has to hide a smile behind the blanket. “You did indeed. I am rightly rebuked. I will never again question your prowess, brave sir knight.” She takes the bird from him and efficiently plucks it, burying the offal. With a considering glance at him, then, she holds it up by the legs and creates a ring of fire around it, reckoning that to be a quicker method than spitting it.

A smirk tugged at his lips as he swung the quiver off his shoulder, placing it by the tree with a bow. “That’s one way to do it.”

“The other way takes too long, and I’m tired. Can you get me something to put this on?” The bird is sizzling and the juices are dripping to the forest floor, andd she lets the fire fade away. It makes the night seem a lot colder, suddenly.

“I already regret this.”

“Don’t be, this’ll be lots of fun for us, not everyday one goes exploring.”

“Speak for yourself, I go exploring all the time. I’m usually better prepared than this, though.”

“But being unprepared is going to make this trip that much enjoyable. Who knows what we will see?”

“Trees? Rocks? A complete lack of Mordred?”

“Probably, yes and I’m going to ignore that you must bring Mordred into every conversation we have.”

“Wha—oh. Well, I’m sorry, then. I shan’t speak of him anymore, since you are so jealous.”

“Wake up,” Summer murmurs in Mordred’s ear. She kisses his cheek. “I’ve brought you breakfast, fy nhariad.”

They wouldn’t starve; there is cheese and bread and apples, but she doesn’t bother to argue. It’s not worth it, so she just tucks the sword by her side, nods, and repeats, “Be careful.”

”Always am,” he calls, disappearing off to the woods and returning around twenty minutes later with pheasant in his hand. “Told you so.”

“You said you wouldn’t leave me,” she mutters, but it’s halfhearted at best. Probably they should have hunted on the road, but she’d felt hurried, and so they had not, and now obviously it was too late. “Be careful.”

“It’s either I leave to hunt or we starve,” he tells her, pulling out a set of quivers and an arrow from another satchel, handing his sword to her. “I’ll be back soon, I promise.”

She holds to him for a little while longer, as the foreign pain dwindles. At last the fire burns low, and she lifts a finger to it, causing it to blaze up again. The action seems to return some life to her. “We should eat, and sleep.”

He nods in agreement, running his hand through her hair. “I’ll get you some blankets before I go find some game,” he tells her, getting up gently and heading to the horses, pulling out blankets and placing them around her. “I’ll be back soon.”

“I think — it was my sister. My twin. Something happened.” The empath pushes herself upright, sliding to lean against his chest. “I’m scared, Mordred. Don’t leave me alone.”

“It wasn’t my idea,” Summer says shakily. She claims one of his hands, pressing her face to it. “That — that hasn’t happened in a long time. When I was younger, when my magic first appeared, I would have seizures if I encountered a very strong emotion in someone else,” she explains. “But — there’s no one but you and me here.”

The knight glanced around, falling silent, listening and a look of thought crossed his face. “Perhaps there is someone else,” he tells her “someone we can’t see.”

She clings to the sense of him, breathing hard. The sense of being overwhelmed receeds, but the pain is still so strong it brings tears to her eyes. It’s centred low in her body, and she half-expects to see blood when she lifts her hands. But there’s nothing, and her own feaar intensifies.

Oddly, that helps, providing a buffer. There’s still someone else’s pain, but she’s able to push it away, to truly be aware that it’s not hers. She curls over on her side, dragging in slow, ragged breaths.

He breathes a sigh of relief, clinging to her as he watched the pain drain from her face as she curls onto her side and he rests his forehead against her shoulder, his hands shaking. “D-Don’t you e-ever do that again,” he whispers, lifting his head up, “you scared me.”
