Turning into the parking lot of her apartment complex, Summer rolled her eyes. “As far as whomever’s hunting me goes, you can do whatever you like, though killing them is probably off the table. Jesse … is a different story.” She turned the car off and slumped back against the seat. “Especially since he’s here.”

“Who’s Jesse?” he asked in confusion, raising an eyebrow. “I’m gonna need some details,” he said, shaking his head a little and looking out the window. “This might be easier if I was a wolf.”

“Jesse is my obsessive, blackmailing, crazy ex.” She turned in her seat to try to catch Isaac’s eyes and instead found herself tempted to tangle her fingers in his curly hair. Stay on track, Summer, she admonished herself. “He broke up with me, but he won’t let me go now. I doubt hurting him is going to do a lot of good, and he’s going to pitch a fit the minute he sees you.”

“He’s going to assume you’re my boyfriend.”

“So you’re saying it’s okay for people to know because you can just pick up their cars?!” She wanted to bang her head on the steering wheel. “Nrrrrgh, doesn’t matter. Fine. Cards on the table — I’m an empath. I think that’s why the hunter wants me. I don’t know what he wants me /for/, though.”

Isaac nodded slowly, pretending to understand most of what she said. “I promise I don’t usually parade my powers around. These were extenuating circumstances.”

She dropped into the driver’s seat, staring at the steering wheel. “There’s someone hunting me. I don’t know who it is. I’m not sure why, either, but I have some ideas.” Starting the car, she put it into reverse, looking Isaac hard in the face before backing out. “Also, my ex is blackmailing me, and trying very hard to control my life.”

Her hands tightened on the wheel. “And I think the hunter is trying to use spellwork on me.”

There was no way he was going to believe her.

Isaac just stared at her for a while before shrugging. “Good enough for me. I’m a werewolf,” he said matter of factly. “So what exactly is it that you’re asking me to do?” he asked.

“You’re a what?” The car jerked. Hastily she wrestled it back under control. “Is that something you should be saying to just anyone? I could be lying my face off for all you know!”

Fuck it. They were going to her apartment, because this conversation was going to take a long time.

Isaac raised an eyebrow. “i picked up your car,” he pointed out, blinking a couple of times. “And I’m kind of stuck with you.”

“I wasn’t bargaining for /anything/. Dear gods.” She rubbed at her face for a minute. “Okay, fine. You want to be my bodyguard?”

“Sure. Why do you need a bodyguard exactly?”

Summer opened her mouth to answer, then closed it. “That’s … not a conversation we should have out here,” she said instead. “Get in the car and I’ll tell you on the way.”

Isaac shrugged it off and climbed in the car, closing the door gently behind him and looking at her once again. “Alright. Talk.”

“Hey, hey! Okay! Put my girl back down! She’s old, she can’t take that kind of treatment, what the hell.”

What the /hell/.

“What /are/ you?” Summer was having a hard time not letting her mouth just gape open. She took a moment to look at him, /really/ look.

Isaac grinned at her reaction and looked her over. “Probably a little more than you bargained for,” he said, shrugging.
