Victor followed her closely past the gate and stood directly behind Summer and breathed into her neck. “I’d love for you to show me, Summer.”

“Greedy,” she riposted easily. “Have a little patience.” Grinning, she pushed up on her toes just enough to whack Victor on the chin. “I’m not a headrest, darlin’.”

Victor looked a little sheepish before he righted the shoulder of her shirt, kissed her soundly right below her ear then stood up. There was a twinkle in his eye as he held his hand out to her. “Sorry, I don’t really feel temperature. Would you like to stop by my place? Or…

Victor watched her as she leapt into the air and to his surprise stayed there. He laughed a low hearty laugh, the likes of which he hadn’t done in years.
Victor most certainly could not fly but he kept pace on the ground, entranced by her wings. “You didn’t tell me you were magic Summer!” He grinned, there was no accusation in his voice, merely awe.

“There’s a lot you don’t yet know about me, darlin’,” she said, laughing back. Summer chose to land before crossing the street to her apartment complex, unlatching the pedestrian gate with swift ease and holding it for Victor. Flicking through her keys one-handed, she led the way up and into her apartment.

Victor looked a little sheepish before he righted the shoulder of her shirt, kissed her soundly right below her ear then stood up. There was a twinkle in his eye as he held his hand out to her. “Sorry, I don’t really feel temperature. Would you like to stop by my place? Or your’s? Whichever you’re most comfortable at.” He looked around him and rocked back a little bit. “It’s going to get colder and I don’t want you to freeze to death.” He said with a smirk as he threw her words back at her.

Summer took his hand and pulled hard, a little wavery as she got to her feet. “Oh dear, what have I gotten myself into,” she said lightly, grinning at Victor. “Bets on mine being closest?” Letting go his hand, she stuck her tongue out and started to run up the path.

Victor chuckled at her comment but before he could respond she had taken off. He shook his head, looking after her fondly for a moment before taking off for her. One of the perks of being a vampire was that he had incredible speed and stamina so he could keep pace for a long time. “Well that was cheeky.” He said to her as they made their way up the path once he had caught up to her. “How far away is your house?” He wondered aloud as they continued on.

“Apartment,” she corrected. “Not far, south edge of the park.” He kept up with her, and it made her laugh, bright and loud in the cold air. Let’s see him keep up with this! And in a smooth, familiar movement Summer leapt into the air, a heartbeat-fast thought calling flaming, flaring wings into existence, wings she didn’t need but loved to show anyway. “Can you catch me now, Victor?”

Victor looked at her then and smiled a wide grin. Suddenly, his face went serious and he took her hand in his and brought her knuckles up to his lips and pressed his lips against her knuckles gently. His eyes never left hers and in a moment he was next to her, their thighs next to each other and his hand reached behind her back and held her other hand. He rested his head against her shoulder so as not to invade too much and whispered in her ear. “However you want me to. Whether it be taking you out, enjoying an evening together or just hanging out. I will always be here for you.”

She couldn’t quite help jumping at the speed of his movements. ‘Must be a vampire thing,’ she told herself, and then she was shuddering as his breath whispered past that point behind her ear that always, always unwound her. Victor’s voice was very nice, Summer had already admitted this to herself, and having him murmur in her ear was doing terrible things to her hormones. Deliberately, she leaned back into the half-embrace, and whispered back, “Surprise me. I want you to surprise me. If there’s something I want, I’ll tell you.”

Victor hummed in her ear at her response. He turned his head and planted feather light kisses on her shoulder. “Good, I like someone who knows what they want.” He murmured in her ear between each bob of his head, his accent noticeably thicker.

“Your voice is going to kill me,” Summer told him. “And if you pull the shoulder of my shirt any farther off in this weather, I’ll whack you.” There was just enough edge to her tone to let him know she was serious. “However, anything you want that doesn’t involve me freezing,” she snickered, “be my guest.”

“If you’re worried about hurting me emotionally, then don’t. You … can’t, really. I’ve been all those places,” she looked down, picking at the grass, “heard every possible hurtful thing. If it’s about the vampirism … I think the only person who can ease your mind on that is yourself. I mean, so long as you can’t accidentally turn me, I don’t really care. Other than that, just don’t lie to me, and we’re good.”

Victor’s head snapped up and his eyes were hopeful. “I’m sorry you’ve been to all of those places and if you’re willing to put up with me….I’d love to be with you.”

He had a distant look in his eyes for a moment then he turned to her. “It’s impossible for it to happen accidentally. Even if I bit you, you wouldn’t turn. You’d have to drink my blood…So long as I don’t feed you blood, which I don’t see happening…” He stopped realizing he was rambling like an idiot. “It just could never happen on accident.”

“Be with me?” Summer’s voice went up on a squeak. “You want to … but I’m not — I mean, you’re too … um.” She was trying to hide a shy, surprised smile, ducking her head. “I thought we were still talking about being friends,” she murmured.

Victor blushed, something he rarely did. “Well….umm..I..ahh…” For the first time in a long time he was at a loss for words. “Well, uh, you had said something about wanting to be more than friends..? And I’m too what? You’re not what?” He was worried now that he’d gone too far and in the wrong direction.

“… I expected you to say no to that. It’s the way my life is.” Summer pulled up some more grass, hair falling around her face. “Honestly, Victor, nobody wants to be with someone who can truly tell if they’re lying. I know you say different, but I’m just not really a likable person. At least most people don’t seem to think so.” She glanced back up, through the waves of red hair. “That’s not a ‘no,’ by the way. It’s more of a ‘I don’t understand what you’re thinking’.”

Victor smirked and moved his hand near her’s, not quite touching but nearly there. “Well I have this habit of defying expectations and I’m determined to prove it to you.” He smiled then looked back up at the night sky. “Even before I was a vampire I knew I could read body language very well, it made most of my relationships impossible and a lot of them didn’t work out because I saw the deception but let it go.” He shrugged a bit then. “I’m thinking I want to be with you, we both have our own baggage but so long as it isn’t a no then I’m happy.”

“And just how do you plan to prove it to me?” she teased lightly.

Victor looked at her then and smiled a wide grin. Suddenly, his face went serious and he took her hand in his and brought her knuckles up to his lips and pressed his lips against her knuckles gently. “What do you mean by cheating?” Victor asked then sighed as he took a swig from a drink. “I’m usually a decent judge of character. That and there’s something about you that draws me in. That makes me want to be around you.” He said then looked down a little self conscious at explaining his emotions.

“Empath,” she said gently. “I don’t have to worry about if I should trust people. I call it cheating.”

“Oh, I see what you mean there. Well, I read people’s facial expressions and body language pretty well. It’s not the same as being an empath but it’s served me pretty well.” He ran a hand through his medium length hair, needing to do something, to act. He wasn’t used to displaying his emotions and while he didn’t have a problem with Summer knowing them he was afraid his emotions wouldn’t be reciprocated.

“Now why does talking about this tangle you up so much?” Summer frowned a little, looking at Victor from the corner of her eye. “Fear, frustration, concern — that’s a lot of shadows, darlin’.”

Victor looked up at her momentarily surprised then he remembered her ability. “It tangles me up cos I don’t want to hurt the people I care for, which tends to happen. It’s frustrating cos I have these emotions that are holding me back that I can’t seem to shake.”

He shrugged, his chameleon eyes staring into her own eyes. “I have a lot of baggage but I like you. I like you a lot Summer.”
