She forced herself to take a deep breath, and it tripped that switch inside her that made her calm in emergencies. She had no idea why she was like that, but she would take advantage of it when it happened. Snagging her phone, she looked up CPR quickly, then rolled the boy over onto his side, hoping some of the water would drain out of his lungs. If she was lucky, he wouldn’t’ve breathed much of it in.

Putting the phone on speaker, she dialed her sister, needing to get him off the shoreline and somewhere warm. While she spelled out the problem, she rolled the boy onto his back again, very carefully, and began to apply CPR. She’d never been more grateful for her twin’s strange ability, or her own, when her twin popped into view in the shadow of a tree after only one cycle of compressions.

His skin was still frighteningly cold. While her twin pulled the jacket tighter around his body, she checked the shore of the icy lake for his clothes, coming up with a pair of jeans and a sweater. No shoes. She hurried back to her sister, and the two linked hands, crouched over his still body, while her dark-haired twin teleported them all back to her apartment.

The dark twin hurried off immediately to find some granola bars and hot drinks, and the red-haired twin grabbed all the blankets off her couch and spread them over the boy. Then she bolted to the bathroom, pausing only to wind her soaking braid up into a bun and pin it there, before grabbing a towel to put under his head.

Then she started CPR again. Maybe a minute had passed. Thirty compressions, carefully measured, two breaths. Repeat. Pray.

Finally, long after she’d lost track of how long she’d been trying to save his life, he sputtered, and coughed up what seems to be half a lake.

As the twins fussed over him, frantically trying to save him from the cold that was eating him alive, he lay still…not so much as a flinch indicating he was alive at all. If it hadn’t been for his faint heartbeat or his shaking torso, anyone would’ve said he was dead.

Some colour returned to his pale face after he’d been wrapped in the coat for some time. The warmth was slowly brining him back, sparking some life back into his frozen features. It wasn’t until the CPR, however, that his eyes snapped open, alert and terrified.

He immediately began to cough up the water he’d swallowed, soaking the floor around him in the stuff. This went on for a few seconds. Each time he thought it was over he’d all of a sudden splutter out another mouthful of the lake.

Finally, it was over. He was awake and, despite the terror the leaked into his expression, he was relieved to be alive. He opened his mouth to speak, wiping away some of the thrown up water off of his chin “I-I…” he paused, attempting to stop himself shaking so much so that he wouldn’t stammer his words. “Where am I? W-what happened?” He tried to pull himself onto his feet but simply didn’t have the energy to move.

Two faces, identical green eyes but framed by different-coloured hair, leaned over him. The dark-haired twin gently pushed him back to the floor; the red-headed one murmured, “Sshh. Don’t try to move yet. You were drowning. I pulled you out and we brought you back to my place.” She pulled the blankets a little higher on him, where he’d dislodged them trying to sit up.

“I’m Winter. This is Summer,” the other one chimed in. Letting him go, she pressed a steaming cup on her twin, insisting in a quiet voice that Summer had to recover as well from her dip in the icy lake. When Summer finally gave in, Winter fetched more towels, mopping the floor hastily and draping one over her twin’s hair.

Summer spoke to him quietly, in between sips. “How do you feel? Can you feel your hands and feet yet?” She nodded to the bundle on the couch, his jeans and sweater. “I couldn’t find all your clothes.” That came accompanied by a duck of the head and what might be a faint blush, suggesting as it did his nearly-nude state.

She hates cold. Always has. Maybe it’s a function of her birthdate — summer child, summer named. So she wasn’t really sure why she’d gone walking through the forest on this bitterly cold day, except that she couldn’t stand being inside any more.

It might have been coincidence that had her looking toward the lake as the boy slipped under the surface. Then again, given her power, maybe not.

She waited, holding her own breath, for him to come back up. Waited until spots danced in front of her eyes, and then panic began to rise inside her. She practically threw her mind toward the water, and came up with near-nothing. Silence. Half a second after that she was yanking her coat off, shoes, dropping phone and wallet and keys in a heap on the ground, stripping down to nothing but underwear.

The water was /freezing/. Almost immediately it felt like it was crushing her, it was so cold. A few powerful kicks drove her to him, and she wrapped a hand around his wrist and tugged. It took two, in the end, to get them both up to the surface, and she dragged in huge, gasping breaths when they breached. Her whole body shivered under the cold, but she forced herself onward.

Finally they were both spilled onshore, and she dove for her clothes, stripping as much water off herself as she could before she dragged her clothes back on. She put her coat over him, and hoped she remembered her CPR. Ten compressions to the chest, ten breaths?

Isaac had been struggling in the lake for what seemed like forever, but in reality was around ten minutes. The temperature of the icy lake had drained him of any slither of energy, seeming to also render his wolf healing powers useless. It was only a matter of time before he’d inevitably have gone under, like he had, and passed out.

After being dragged back to the edge, he was still out cold, no more than vivid nightmares ringing through his mind. The coat brought a little, much needed, warmth to his body. He didn’t have long left, not unless his saviour knew what she was doing… His lungs were full of water, they needed be emptied fast or he’d die…his life was her hands now.

She forced herself to take a deep breath, and it tripped that switch inside her that made her calm in emergencies. When you push someone’s head under water for 5 minutes, they will drown. It doesn’t matter if the person is a sinner or a saint. It’s just a natural process. If their head is under water, the lack of oxygen will make them drown. That rule applies to everyone, good or bad, equally.

Isaac knew that all too well. And as the beta struggled to keep his head above the water of the icy lake, that was all he could think about. None of what he’d done mattered right now: all that mattered was swimming to the top, so why couldn’t he do it? Why was he suddenly incapable of such a simple task?

He was drugged with exhaustion after so long fighting for his life. So he gave up. He disappeared under the surface, unable to stay conscious a second longer. Even for a werewolf, there was only so long he could hold his breath. He needed help. Fast. image

“Don’t you touch him!” Summer runs down the alley, not even stopping to think about what she’s doing. She can taste the pain like iron in her mouth, like a rusty nail, and she flings her hand out to block that motion. There’s no time for fear as she puts herself between the two figures.

Isaac shrunk back, curling into a ball against the wall. He wasn’t entirely sure what was going on himself…. Fear and pain poisoned his body as he tried his best not to cry. After hearing a familiar voice he glanced up “No-he’ll hurt you! D-Don’t” It was no use, she was already stood between the scared wolf and this brute of a man. Isaac felt a tear escape down his cheek as the man grabbed the girl, tossing her to the floor in one, effortless motion.

Shaking with reaction, Summer let the fire fade from her hands, wondering. She hadn’t known she could do that — any of that. A soft sound from behind her made her whirl, and then her eyes glittered with tears. “Oh,” she said quietly, “oh honey. No. No no no. Come here.” She pulled at Isaac, putting her arms around him. “He’s gone. Shhhh. It’s okay now. It’s okay. Are you hurt?”

Isaac leaned closer to her, shaking slightly as she comforted him. “W-who was he?” he asked in a broken voice, looking up at her with lost eyes. “I can’t do this anymore,” he mumbled with tears in his eyes “I’m worthless…I can’t fix this now…I can’t fix it.” He started to panic as his heart rate started to pick up. He took in rapid breaths and looked into a blank space…he seemed to be having a panic attack.

“I don’t know who he was — a hunter, I think. An assassin of some kind.” Summer stroked his hair. “Shhh, shh, it’s okay. Breathe, honey. Listen to me.” She put her fingers under his chin and made him look at her. “Come on. Come on, we need to get you out of here.” Much more gently than she’d done with the hunter, she brushed him with her power, easing down his panic.

Her fingers curled into claws with the force of her anger. “Let’s not get /aggressive/?” she spat. “You’re trying to kill him!” She stalked forward, driving him back, swiping at him with hands filled with fire. The fire didn’t seem to burn her, dancing and curling against her skin, but the heat radiated into the small alley, and sparks drifted upward. She’d never been so angry in her life, and it was that, perhaps, that impelled her next actions.

She impressed fear on the hunter; terrible, debilitating, unreasoning terror, of her, of Isaac, of the supernatural. She burned it into his brain, and said, “Leave, now, and never come back.”

The man felt something deep inside him change as the creature attacked him, ripping away at his mind until he felt a spark go out. Next thing he knew, the people standing in front of him were more terrifying then anything he’d ever seen before, causing him to cower in their presence. As soon as he was told to leave, he took the opportunity, dashing out of the alley and down the street.

Even though the hunter was gone, Isaac was badly traumatised by the whole experience. It’d brought back too many bad memories from his childhood, the kinds of things that left him feeling worthless and unwanted. He curled into a ball against the wall, sobbing quietly to himself.

Shaking with reaction, Summer let the fire fade from her hands, wondering. She hadn’t known she could do that — any of that. Maybe it was the offhanded denigration and the way Isaac just took it, or the casual throwing of the knife — or simply the hunter’s assumption that being any kind of supernatural creature made one worthless. “You know nothing,” she said, voice low and controlled. She touched Isaac’s arm, pulling his pain away, and added, “You never asked what I was.”

It felt like something broke open inside her, tearing its way to the surface, and as she lunged for the hunter, fire burst from her hands. ”I know exactly what he is,” she snarled, breathing rough. “He is my /friend/. That is all I need to know.”

The hunter was caught off guard, having had no idea that this girl was also supernatural in some way. He gritted his teeth together as she spoke, glaring at the pair of monsters standing before him. Isaac felt his pain seep away into Summer, releasing a small breath of relief. “Well then you’re both better off dead!” he snapped before spitting at them, ”My job is to rid the world of scum like you!” He yelled, confidence in every word. As soon as fire burst out of the girl’s hands his confidence faded and he flinched back. “O-Okay,” he murmured, holding out his hands to protect himself, “let’s not get aggressive…”

She hit the ground hard, breath jolting out of her, and a hand clamped to her aching shoulder. It took her a moment to struggle to her feet, but it’s amazing how much energy rage can give you. It felt like her skin was burning, and her muscles were so tense it hurt. “I said,” she grated, “don’t /touch/ him.” There’s a trick she used to be able to do, in high school, becoming dead weight, grounding herself so firmly to the earth even burly football players couldn’t move her.

Isaac pulled himself off the floor, limping to stand by her side. The stranger glared at her, a knife propped neatly in his hand “Well, miss, you don’t know the full story…do you know what your friend is?” he asked, smirking at Isaac “Because he’s far from worth saving, I can tell you that!”

Isaac hung his head after the hunter’s comment, “I don’t deserve to die…” he mumbled in a muffled voice “Is that so?” the hunter smirked, tossing the knife in Isaac’s direction.

Soothingly, she said, “No, you aren’t insane. It’s okay. Just talk to me.” Summer pulled his head into her lap, one hand on his shoulder and the other on his temple, and brushed him with her empathy again, hoping she can figure out what is causing him so much trouble. There didn’t seem to be anyone else in his head. Perhaps he was a telepath?

He scrunched his eyes as the voices rang through his mind, whispering to him. “What’s wrong with me?” he whimpered, shaking uncontrollably. He was convinced he was losing his mind, maybe all this death had just pushed him over the edge.

“Shh, shhh,” Summer murmured. “I don’t know, but you have to calm down — you aren’t helping. You need to tell me what’s going on, so I can help you. Hold to my hand. It’s okay.”

Summer dropped to her knees beside the boy, catching at his shoulders. “Hey, hey. Look at me. Breathe, come on. Look at me. It’s okay.” Gently, she eased his terror just a little, enough that he was no longer about to panic.

Isaac took a deep breath and looked into her eyes as he felt some of his stress fade away. “I’m going insane…I-I have voices in my head…” he mumbled, trying to ignore them as they shouted at him in his mind.
