Madmen engineers (I think there’s a Tony Stark fic about this, come to think of it) build machines to see who can hurl an intact pumpkin the farthest. They’re grouped by how they’re powered, i.e. trebuchet, air cannon, spinning, etc. A pumpkin that explodes before impact with the ground is considered pied.

The build team from mythbusters hosts it for discovery/science channel’s broadcast on thanksgiving. One of the teams has a guy who is a psychiatrist in is day job — and he’s wandering round the backfield in chain mail and a helmet. One of the trebuchets this year threw a pumpkin so far it went into the campground on the far side of the field.
