“Toni, where do you want to sleep? You can have the bed if you like, I don’t mind sleeping on the couch.”

“Why don’t we share the bed?” He questions, giving her another quick kiss. “Or I can get the couch. I barged in on you, I’m not going to make you give up your bed.”

“Fair point. I was … avoiding my feelings for you? Anyway I don’t smell like a bar now. At least I hope not. Maybe I better take a shower.”

“You smell fine,” Toni smiles, leaning down to give her cheek a quick kiss. “You smell like Summer.”

She laughs. “Now is that the season or just me? Fine, you will have my bed, and I will have it with you.”

“Oh, well, the last time I wanted to share a bed with you, darling, you said no,” she teases.

“The last time you tried to share a bed with me, you smelled like a bar, you dork.”

Biting his lower lip, Toni swiped at his eyes again, raising a hand to place a light knock on Summer’s door. After everything that happened today he just . . .he can’t be around Tony for the moment, and Summer’s home is the only other place that reminds him of home and he . . .he stands there waiting for his favorite redhead to answer.

Summer never has visitors. She scrambles out of her chair and pulls the door open, blinking up at Toni. “Toni?” Immediately she can tell something’s wrong. “What is it? Come in, come in.” She gestures him in, shuts the door. “What’s going on?”

“Shhh,” she murmurs, kissing his hair. “I’m here. It’s okay. You don’t need to do anything, just be here with me. Let it go.” She rocks a little, and barely brushes him with her empathy, easing away the worst of the ache bit by bit.

Looking up after most of the silent tears were gone, he leans forward, carefully placing a warm kiss on her lips, moving to cup the back of her head. “Thank you.”

Summer draws back just a little and smiles. “Of course, Toni.” Her eyes flick down, then back up to his. “I love you.” She pulls him close again.

She strokes his hair. “Don’t say that. Don’t say that, Toni, you don’t know that. Sometimes you can’t have what you want; things just don’t allow for it. I’m sure, I’m so sure, you were wanted, you were loved, just like you are now.” She cups his cheek, smoothing away the tearmarks.

Toni leans into the touch, reaching up to gently grip her wrist. “I wonder if they’re happy,” he mutters, tucking his head back into her neck. “I don’t …Summer …” Trailing off with a hitch in his breath he moves himself closer, trying to see if he can get that feeling of home again. “Summer …I can’t.”

Summer glances over it quickly; it seems official enough, though she doesn’t have a lot to base that on. She puts it on the table by the door and wraps her arms around Toni. “Of course you can stay here.” She squeezes him once, tightly, and takes the bag away, putting it in the first empty space nearby. “Come on,” she says, and pulls him over to the loveseat. “Do you want to talk about it, or not think about it?”

Toni shrugs, leaning against her to wrap his arms around her tiny waist. “I don’t know what to think,” he murmurs, tucking his face in the crook of her neck. Closing his eyes, he takes a deep breath, feeling his heart constrict again. “Summer, why do you think they didn’t want me?” He’s not crying, but his throat is scratchy and he’s just so done with all of this.

Shifting his duffel bag to the other hand, he fidgets slightly in his spot before pulling a photocopied paper out of his pocket, handing it to the other, hand shaking slightly. “I was going through my dad’s study yesterday,” he swallows, feeling his eyes burn slightly. “Turns out I’m adopted. I …I always thought …why Howard and Maria don’t have baby pictures of me …and the orphanage. I knew I hadn’t made that up. I …uh …I was wondering if I could stay here tonight.” Giving her a hopeful expression, he fidgets again and rubs at his arm, feeling embarrassed. “If that’s okay with you.”
