“That means you’re stuck calling me Tony. Because ‘Mr. Stark’ is so formal, no offense to you, but it makes me want to puke. So if I’m calling you Summer, best get used to calling me Tony.” He lets out a snort of amusement. “Heroic male self-sufficiency bullshit. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.”

“Tony, then. I’m serious. No pretending everything’s okay when it’s not; I’ll know.” Summer raises her eyebrows and gives the dark-haired man a stern look that quickly dissolves into a smile. “That being firmly established, would you care to join me for dinner?”

He gives a lazy shrug of his shoulders. “I don’t know about that. I’m pretty damn good at hiding my problems should I have any so good luck on figuring that puzzle out. Not everything about every ranger is in our file. Files are just complied data. They don’t tell you everything.” He returns the smile. “Oh? Don’t you eat in the mess hall like everybody else? Because that’s where I was headed off to before I bumped into you.”

“Well, yes,” she allows, “but I do generally eat alone. I’m inviting you to share my table, Tony.” She clasps her hands at her breast dramatically, adopting a wildly overblown tone. “Save me from the deadly boredom of patient files, good sir, I beg you!”

She can’t help laughing a little. “You’re so obviously a pilot it hurts. Please, call me Summer. If we’re all going to be crammed in here cheek by jowl it’s stupid to be formal — especially if I end up rummaging inside your head any.” She sobers for a moment. “You will come to me if you have problems, I trust. No heroic male self-sufficiency bullshit.”

“You’re one of the lucky ones, Mr Stark. I’ve talked with a lot of rangers that just have trouble dealing with the things they didn’t know about their co, rabbit or no rabbit.” Summer offered him a sideways smile. “Should I expect you to be the sort who gets into fights?”

“Oh, that sort of thing. Well, it’s all about control and communication with your co. It’s important that both rangers get to know one another at least a little bit before stepping into that jaeger. It’s easier for siblings, relatives, and the like. However, complete strangers is another story.” Tony shrugs his shoulders and offers a wry smile. “No, Ms. Rainault. I don’t pick fights, unless it’s with a kaiju. But I’ll sure as hell finish them.”

He put his hands up in mock defeat. “Well well well, pardon me miss. This is why people wear their badges and not stick them in their pockets. Besides, medics look like your average ordinary folk. I haven’t really gotten myself acquainted with everyone quite just yet. I am a pilot, yes. Got here a week ago because America is slow to get with the program of transferring our jaeger here to Hong Kong. This place has so many people already, so keeping up with names and faces is a task in of itself.”

“Alright, alright, you have a point.” Ostentatiously, she clipped the badge to her necklace. “There. Better?” She held out a hand. “Summer Rainault. I’ll be in charge of helping you madmen get your minds back inside your skulls after drift. And incidentally helping patch you up sometimes.”

“Much.” He takes the hand offered to him and gives it a firm handshake before retracting his hand. “Tony Stark. I can usually batten down the hatches and not chase the rabbit when in the Drift. I’ve been doing this gig for long enough that I know how to keep my mind in my skull. As for the occasional rough housing, I’ll be sure to swing by your office.”

“So, civilian, what brings you around? I mean, you really don’t have the clearance to be here but considering there’s no kaiju running around right now, I’m sure no one’s really going to get that bent out of shape about it.”

“Excuse you? I’m a medic. I belong here just as much as you. Unless you’re not the arrogant pilot I’m taking you to be?” The redhead pulled a badge from her back pocket and flashed it at him.
