She seemed sincere in her praise, and Loki raised his eyebrows and smiled.

He gave a little bow. “My pleasure, Miss Sigyn. Now, this way, if you please.” He held one hand out while taking a short step towards the bed.

Sigyn held her hands up in protest. “Truly, I can’t put you out of your own bed. The couch is more than good enough for someone like me. Please.”

He gave her a somewhat lascivious look. “It seems we are at an impasse. Perhaps… a compromise?” He emphasized the debauched look with a cocked eyebrow.

She ducked her head hard, amazement transmuting to … something else. He was handsome, fascinating, alluring, and she was out of her depth. “Is that what you want, my lord? I … ” She gave him an unintentionally appealing look from under her eyelashes, licking her lips.

Tingles danced over Sigyn’s skin where Loki’s fingers brushed. Her eyes fluttered closed briefly; she sucked in a swift breath. “No, of course not.” Another breathless laugh escaped her. “My poor skills have been of little help.”

He gave an impish smile, pleased at her reaction to his slight touch. He grabbed her around the waist, keeping eye contact and snapped his wrist around. There was a flash of bright blue light and suddenly they were standing in his bed chambers.

He didn’t immediately release her from his grasp.

Sigyn gazed around in amazement, hands resting lightly on his arms. Of course the rooms of a prince of Asgard would be almost overwhelmingly elegant, but the casual ease with which he had accomplished the teleport was equally breathtaking.

She turned a brilliant smile on Loki. “That was wonderful!”

“It’s a quiet neighborhood,” Loki said with a brief smile.  ”and no, not particularly.  Macrowafter found me, and he’s the sole lord and master of my household.  Silly me—before acquiring a cat, I considered myself to be the most evolved creature on this planet.”

“Welcome to life as a cat slave. I’ve got four.” She tilted her head to one side, eyeing him. “Do I want to know why his real name is Macrowafter? Or is this like the story of why Doc is called Doc?”

“Four.” Loki’s eyebrows rose.  ”Astonishing you have any time to call your own.”  He shifted Macrowafter to rest in the crook of one arm, sliding his other hand into his trouser pocket.  ”…it is a rather lengthy story.”

“After the first two they’re self-amusing.” Summer let herself have a little moment to admire the very fine man standing there, eyes flicking up and down his lithe frame, before she reined herself in. No use getting caught up in someone so obviously closed off. You didn’t have to be an empath to read that.

“I’m sorry, am I keeping you? If you get me started on certain things I have to be shut up, and I’m afraid cats is one of them.” Summer gave a self-deprecating shrug and a sardonic little laugh. “Just because I’ve nothing to do with my time right now, I forget the same isn’t true of others.”

He glanced up at her—and then back down at the cat, a brief, polite smile crossing his face.  ”…I am Loki.  Thank you for keeping him out of the street.”

“Bless, of course. It’s nice to meet you, Loki.” Summer pushed a long lock of hair behind one ear and gestured around. “I was starting to wonder if anyone else actually lived in this building, for all the life around here.”

Going back down to pick up her brush, she called back, “So you’re a cat person, then? Any others besides that little mischief maker?”

Loki took the kitten, cradling him in two long hands.
“He keeps slipping out—I have no idea how.  Magic, I think.”  He was frowning down at the kitten—who was unabashedly chewing on his cuffs—speaking rather absently.  ”…his name is actually Macrowafter, but he usually comes when I call ‘cat’.”

“All cats have the magic of escape,” Summer said sagely. “Or at least, all the ones I’ve ever known, and that’s quite a lot!” She petted Cat’s nose softly. “They’re born stinkers.”

Looking up, she offered a bright smile. “I’m glad we could find you. I’m Summer.”

“CAT!”  It was a man’s voice, and he was fairly bellowing as he clattered down the last flight of stairs.  ”So help me, you’re better be—” he emerged from the building and stopped abruptly at the sight of Summer and the little black kitten.  He was a tall man, built along graceful, long lines rather than powerful ones.  His black hair was swept back from his patrician face, and he wore slacks, button down shirt and a vest.
“…pardon me, but it appears as though you have located Cat.”

Summer’s mouth twitched suspiciously. She glanced down at the feline lounging in the curve of one arm, then back up. “You let your human name you Cat?” Shaking her head, she walked up to the man and offered the cat. “He’s a friendly fellow, your Cat.” Her eyes danced with laughter. “Maybe a little too friendly, hey?”

The kitten gave a miniature growl and seized a finger between his paws, gnawing on it with little white teeth.

The voice from the building grew a little in volume, the owner clearly hurrying down the stairs.  ”Cat—CAT!  Where have you gotten to, you little devil, you—”

“Ah, ah, noms! Nooo, noms!” Summer giggled. “Fierce kitty! I think I hear someone calling you, fierce kitty. Is that your human? Come on.”

She freed one hand from the fearsome kitten, keeping the other tucked around him as she got to her feet. Ignoring the brush and the swirl of loose red hair around her knees, she turned and started up the steps. “Hello? I think I found your cat,” she called ahead.

He replied again in a high pitched little voice, squirming onto his back in her lap and batting at her fingers as she examined the collar.

There was the sound of a voice in the apartment building behind her, sounding somewhere high up in the stairwell—too far away as of yet to be intelligible.

“Ohh, it’s tummy scritches you want. This better not be a trap!” she warned the black cat, insinuating her fingers under his waving paws. “If you were Kronos it would be a trap, yes it would. But you are a sweet kitty, aren’t you? Yes, who’s a sweet kitty?” She stroked his fuzzy belly, laughing.

“Need to find your humans, little man. I can’t take you in, I have too many already!” Still petting, she frowned slightly. “I guess I’ll just have to knock on all the doors until someone claims you. Bother.” Summer beeped his nose with a fingertip. “Silly kitty, wandering away from your humans.”

But the sunlight was warm and she didn’t move yet.

“Hello, kitty,” Summer said, leaning over and tapping her hands together. “Are you a people kitty? Do you have humans? Come here.” She held out one extended finger, stretching toward the little black thing.

The little cat came to her eagerly with a high pitched little comment, tail up jauntily.  He was wearing a little green collar, though there were no tags which might indicate name or home.

She swooped him up, scritching behind his ears. “Someone’s friendly,” she cooed. “Your humans must be very good to you.” Petting down his back, she turned the collar round a few times. “Do you have a microchip, little man? Your collar doesn’t have any tags.”

Summer Rainault sat on the steps of her apartment building, watching the world go by and wondering what in the world had possessed her to move to New York City. An abandoned brush lay by the stream of hair spread over her knees, the ends stirring lightly in the wind.

The small black cat seemed to materialise out of no-where.  He was hardly bigger than a kitten, with one white rear paw and a white tip on his bushy tail.  He sprang up the bottom step, and then clambered up on the next—heading straight for the girl seated there.

“Hello, kitty,” Summer said, leaning over and tapping her hands together. “Are you a people kitty? Do you have humans? Come here.” She held out one extended finger, stretching toward the little black thing.
