“It’s fine, seriously. I’ve seen crazier things, believe it or not,” Jane said, and chuckled. “But that’s… wow. That’s really something.” It was almost hard to believe that people like Jane or Layla or Charles existed; people with powers that were just natural to them. She was used to Thor, but he wasn’t from his realm, and Bruce, but his had been artificial.

“Have you met Layla Ford?” she asked. “She’s a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. She’s an empath, too. I don’t know how well-known that is, but she doesn’t usually hesitate to tell anyone.” She shrugged, taking another bite from her doughnut. “You guys would probably get along.”

They’d at least have something in common, right?

“So, how’d you decide on New York City to be your place of residence?”

“Winter asked me to. I was already looking for somewhere else to go, really.” She’d known there were others; how do you not know something like that? The whole world had heard of Charles Xavier and his X-Men. “I haven’t actually met any other empaths yet. But NYC seems to be a hotspot for superheroes anyway. Winter did all the work, really.”

Jane nodded, finishing off the doughnuts she was working on and washing it down with coffee. “I’m glad you’re here. It’s nice seeing another person from when I was younger,” she said, and smiled. Really, Summer was the only person Jane had seen from when she was growing up since high school.

“So you’re a web designer now?” She picked up another doughnut, this one jelly-filled. “Have you designed any websites I would’ve seen?” She grinned.

“I kind of doubt it. My big project is a martial arts tournament site, but I do a lot of little consulting projects for people I know. That’s why I’m hoping to meet Tony, actually. If I can get him to let me get my hands on his site … oooh.” Summer flexed her fingers, pretending she was gripping the site, or maybe Tony.

She grinned at Jane. “Or, you know, I can just get my hands on him. I know, I know, he’s an asshole. I know from assholes, though.” Pointing at Jane, she added, “You are lucky, to have someone who cares about you first and himself second. Anyway, it’s not that I’m hard up for money, but getting my name associated with Stark Industries would be a huge boost in a new area.”

Summer snickered. “Okay, I did that on purpose. Sorry.” She closed her hand, and the flame disappeared. “Remember how I used to be able to tell how people were feeling, back then? It … got worse. It actually started to be physically painful. I, um, it almost drove me into convulsions for a while.”

She rubbed her hands together, staring at them, before picking up another doughnut. “To this day, I swear to you, I don’t remember how I figured out how to fix it. I just … called fire, one day. And the pain stopped. It was like … I burned off the foreign emotions. Literally.”

Summer didn’t look at Jane, and her voice fell a little. “For what I just did, with you — sorry about that, by the way — I don’t have to burn it off. But it’s a balance — I take too much in, and I have to call fire, or there’s pain. It has to go somewhere.”

“I figured I might as well try to do something good with it.”

“I know it sounds crazy, but it’s…” Jane shrugged. “It’s different. Thor’s different. Everything he does and says is sincere. We spent nights awake just talking until I couldn’t keep my eyes open.” She sighed, and smiled a bit. “I care about him, yeah. And he cares about me. He really cares about me. I don’t think any guy on Earth could care as much as he does.”

It sounded silly, but it was true. Thor was an entirely different sort of person. “He’s something else. And I can definitely introduce you to him. He loves people.” She grinned. “He might crush your bones with a hug, but that’s about it.” She chuckled.

Summer grinned back. “Oh, well, you know me and big guys. I may be short, but I can hold my own.” Glancing down into her own open palm, she added, “I guess I could always try to set him on fire if it’s annoying.”

And a flame licked up from her hand.

“Woah!” Jane jumped a bit out of reflex, pulling her hand back and staring at Summer’s, before she relaxed. “Oh, right. Super hero… thing. I forgot.” She ran a hand through her hair, shaking her head. It was still crazy. “How does that all even work? I mean… how did you realize you had it? When did it start?” Obviously it had been after high school, right?

Summer snickered. “Okay, I did that on purpose. Sorry.” She closed her hand, and the flame disappeared. “Remember how I used to be able to tell how people were feeling, back then? It … got worse. It actually started to be physically painful. I, um, it almost drove me into convulsions for a while.”

“No, no, the whole invasion happened a while after all that,” Natalie said, shaking her head and picking up one of the chocolate-glazed doughnuts. “Thor got kicked out temporarily and ended up in New Mexico. I ended up picking him up, and he stayed at my place for… only about a week before he left again. But his brother, Loki? He was jealous, so he sent this… Destroyer thing to come and kill Thor.” She shrugged, taking a bite from her doughnut. “Big heroic thing happened, Thor got his powers back, had to go back to Asgard to stop his brother, and ended up getting stuck there for a while.”

She took a sip from her coffee, washing down the bite of doughnut and licking her lips. “S.H.I.E.L.D. kind of got involved in the middle of it all. When Thor got here, they realized something was up, so they sent a whole unit out to New Mexico. They stole all of my equipment and research. The only reason I got it back was because Thor refused to help them unless they did.” She smirked. “But we’re on good terms, now.”

“You go away, and your life turns into a soap opera. So, you’re dating Thor? Even though he was gone for a while, and you only knew him for a week before that … ” Summer drawled. “I just … forgive me, honey, but I have to — ” She closed her eyes and touched the back of Jane’s hand for a second, before her eyes popped back open.

“Wow. That’s just … wow. You really care about him. That’s … ” Her voice softened from the spurt of surprise. “That’s wonderful.”

A dozen? Jane had almost forgotten how much she’d liked Summer back in high school, but it was starting to come back to her. She grinned. “A dozen doughnuts sounds perfect,” she said, and went up to the counter.

“Oh, that’s one hell of a story. It all sort of goes together, too.” She hadn’t really told it to many people, because most people she knew now were well aware of exactly what had happened. She ordered their dozen doughnuts, an assortment of glazed, powdered, jelly-filled, and chocolate, as well as a very large cup of coffee for herself, waiting for Summer before she headed outside and found them a table to sit at.

“How crazy would it sound if I told you that I met Thor because he crash-landed on Earth after he was kicked out of Asgard and I hit him with my car?”

Summer spluttered into the doughnut she was putting into her mouth. “I would say, that sounds exactly like you. We gotta find you a driver!” She licked her fingers contemplatively. “Kicked out of Asgard, huh? Is that why the alien invasion? They don’t give us peons a whole lot of information.”

“No, no, the whole invasion happened a while after all that,” Natalie said, shaking her head and picking up one of the chocolate-glazed doughnuts. “Thor got kicked out temporarily and ended up in New Mexico. “I’m effing starving. I’ve been on cleanup crew all day, and that shit takes it out of you.” Summer ran a hand over her face as if wiping away the thought. “Let’s be indulgent and get a dozen, and go sit outside. I want to hear about how you met Thor, of all people, and got tangled up with SHIELD.”

“Oh my god! Jane!” Summer leaped up out of her chair, yanking Jane into a hug. Then she held the other woman off at arm’s length for a second, looking her over. “You look good. Happy.” Her grin was blinding. “It is so good to see you again!”

Jane laughed, hugging Summer right back. She’d almost forgotten how enthusiastic she was. It was so strange, seeing her again. She hadn’t seen anyone from her high school since she’d moved in her second semester of college.

“Yeah. I feel happy,” she said, and shrugged. “And you look great. I can’t believe you’re living here, too.”

A lot of strange coincidences had been happening lately, but Jane decided not to question them. “Do you wanna get something and then sit down to catch up? I don’t know about you, but I’m dying for a doughnut.” Then again, she was always dying for a doughnut.

“I’m effing starving. I’ve been on cleanup crew all day, and that shit takes it out of you.” Summer ran a hand over her face as if wiping away the thought. “Let’s be indulgent and get a dozen, and go sit outside. Summer walked into the pastry shop, clicked her phone shut, and dropped into a seat with a sigh. The place smelled amazing, that was certain, and the glorious scent of fresh baked goods helped her shoulders relax.

Most people thought being a superhero was a wonderful thing. It really wasn’t, all the time. They weren’t finding bodies, anymore, but there was debris everywhere yet, and the memories would be painful for a long time. Hopefully, she thought, reconnecting with Jane and hearing all her good news would help some of that. Revelling in someone else’s happiness was always nice.

Jane was a bit late to meet Summer, but not on purpose; she’d lost track of time, like she frequently did unless she set an alarm for herself. She wasn’t horrendously late, though, so she wasn’t running when she came inside.

Summer was easy to spot, at least, and Jane smiled. She hadn’t seen her in so long, and they were both definitely very different people from when they’d last seen each other. Summer was a super hero, or something like that, and Jane was an astrophysicist working for S.H.I.E.L.D. It was crazy.

She made her way over to where Summer was sitting, smiling brightly. “Hey!”

“Oh my god! Jane!” Summer leaped up out of her chair, yanking Jane into a hug. Then she held the other woman off at arm’s length for a second, looking her over. “You look good. Happy.” Her grin was blinding. “It is so good to see you again!”

Hah, don’t worry about it, you don’t have to! But awesome, meet me at this place called Puff Pastry, over on ninth avenue. It’s amazing, seriously. Best doughnuts you’ll ever eat. Fresh all the time.

Yeah, I’m suuure about Tony. You can feel free to insult his website to him all you want, though – we’d all get a kick out of that.

And by the way, not all of the good looking ones are bastards. Thor sure as hell isn’t, and he’s the best-looking of the bunch.

See you tomorrow!

Jane

Hah, yeah, sorry about that! I sort of moved to New Mexico to continue my schooling and everything. I’m pretty much just back in New York because I work for SHIELD now.

Call fire? Seriously? This world is crazy, seriously. I’ve met more people who have all kinds of crazy powers lately, but I guess it makes sense because I’m working with SHIELD. But it’s crazier that it’s someone I used to know from high school!

I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to work, so I’m pretty much good for whenever. We could meet up for doughnuts and coffee or something! I know where all the best places are.

Honestly, I could introduce you to Tony, but he’s kind of an asshole. A little bit. But I could still introduce you, if you’d like. Or Pepper, if Tony’s too busy doing… whatever it is he does during the day.

Can’t wait to hear from you!

You sure about Tony? He’s awfully good looking … why are the cute ones always bastards, I ask you? (Even so, his website, OMG, let me get my hands on that! I don’t know who wrote it, but holy shit, I can’t even explain, it’s so bad. SO BAD.)

love and laughter, Summer
