“How could I ever love anybody like you?”

“Anybody like me? Oh, you mean psychopathic vampire who doesn’t give a damn about human life?” he asked, smirking. “Well the good news is that you don’t have to love me.”

It’s entirely too hard to check her phone when she’s arrowing through the sky, so she ignored the little “kamikaze~!” that is her text alert. He thinks she can’t find him, but honestly his mind burned like a beacon. It’s probably to do with that heightened emotions thing he told her about. Just now, since she looked for it, it’s boiling with pain, and she understood why he thought he was dying. He probably hadn’t felt pain like that in a couple decades. Well, if there wasn’t a window open when she got there, she’d just make an open one.

Damon grimaced and limped to his bed, flopping down and groaning. It hurt like hell, and there was no way in hell he was going to be able to pull this off if she insisted on coming. He really was going to die if she stayed… So much for faking his death. He groaned and rolled over, the pain starting to burn through the rest of his body. He was breaking out in a sweat and it was really getting frustrating.

Yep, no open window. But as far as Summer could tell, there wasn’t anyone else in the house, either. Hovering in front of the closest window to where he was, she put a hand on it, and heated the glass until it ran down in hot globs. They hissed in the chill of the night, but thankfully didn’t set anything on fire. Stepping through the frame, she stalked over to his bedside.

“I’m going to save your life, I think, just so I can kill you myself.”

[text to: damon] so while you were prating about protecting me they were stalking you

[text to: damon] open a window I’m coming to you

[text to: summer] That was a goodbye, not an invitation.

[text to: damon] I thought you were already dead

[text to: summer] Hahahaha you’re so funny.

[text to: summer] But seriously. Werewolf bite. Fatal to vampires. I’m dying.

[text to: damon] so while you were prating about protecting me they were stalking you

[text to: damon] you shit. answer me.

[text to: damon] damon. answer me.

[text to: damon] I’m going to find you, and I’m going to set you on fire and not let you burn

[text to: damon] and when they dodge around you? when I don’t know enough to even recognise if they come after me, because it blends in to all the other people who come after me?

[text to: damon] I protect myself

[no response]

[text to: damon] you cheated. I don’t respect that.

[text to: summer] I’m trying to protect you. Hate me if you want to.

[text to: damon] you’ve never met an empath before have you

[text to: damon] thank you so fucking much for letting me make my own choices

[text to: summer] I’m older than you. Have some respect for your elders.

[text to: damon] you cheated. I don’t respect that.

[text to: damon] you shit. you won’t even let me protect myself

[text to: damon] I should compel you to protect me

[text to: summer] Compel a vampire? Cute idea.

[text to: summer] Believe it or not, this is me protecting you.

[text to: damon] that’s cute. you think I can’t find you.

[text to: damon] were you this stupid before you turned or has it accumulated over the years?

[text to: summer] If you find me I swear to god I will bite you and rip that necklace off and compel you to forget.

[text to: summer] It’s accumulated over the years.

[text to: damon] how in the world do you think you can even do that

The fact that he’d let her hit him reduced the anger to a simmer instead of a hot roil under her skin. “I’m in danger every moment, in a myriad of ways. Simply being a woman would be enough to endanger me, far less what I truly am.” Her mouth compressed. “Go. Hunt. Find some thief, some murderer, some Wall street asshole with a soul smaller than a pinprick — or some innocent human on their way home. And when your hunger is sated, find me, and give me the details I will need to protect myself.” It wasn’t a request.

He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “I’ll be back after a bite,” he muttered, zipping away from her. Three unfortunate bystanders later, Damon was sitting in the foreclosed house, feet propped up on the couch. He sighed and picked up his phone, staring at it for a few moments before sending the text.

Damon: I lied. I'm not coming back.
Damon: To keep yourself safe, delete my number and forget all about me. But keep that necklace on.

[text to: damon] that’s cute. you think I can’t find you.
