Her expression softened. “I heard that, Victor darling.” She scraped her nails a little against his skull. “Shhh now, I’m only teasing. Let the SHIELDies alone.” Slowly she stroked his hair, ruffling her fingers up into it.

He turned and kissed her. “I know…and I will,” he paused a moment, “so long as they behave.” He turned a little more so that he could look her in the eye. “What exactly do you do for SHIELD? I’ve heard of them, some of my friendly rivals are employed by them but I don’t really know what’s what there.”

“I can’t say a lot,” Summer began slowly, searching his dark eyes. “I can tell you what /I/ do, but not much more.” She paused, eyes going distant. “Mostly, I do search and rescue. Because I’ve got such a wide range, and I can identify people’s mental signatures after having spent some time with them. So in a crisis situation, a crash, a building collapse, a hostage circumstance, I can tell who’s in trouble and sometimes what kind of trouble. Then I can use my magic to clear a safe path. Sometimes.”

“That sounds interesting, and don’t worry, I know all about confidentiality. You think they’ve got room for one more assassin? I’m virtually indestructible.” Victor added half jokingly. He’d been thinking of a little more legalized version of his occupation, or rather one that was a little more sanctioned. “It must be nice, putting your gifts to use helping other people,” he said almost wistfully while he stroked her hair.

“Well, I’d never be able to do what you do, but I’m not as happy as I could be.” She sighed. “I’m a consultant, on purpose, so I can turn down missions that bother me, and so I can offer my services like when Sandy hit. I was down in New Orleans for almost a year after Katrina. But honestly there are times when I’d rather be in combat instead of having to hang back and wait. I’m only useful when things are at their worst, and it’s a pretty thankless job.”

“What would you rather be doing love?”

“Being a consultant does have it’s ups I suppose. Yeah, I’ve unique skills I suppose. Even before my vampirism I could rival most of the assassins out there. I agree though, the most important jobs are those that are rarely thanked.”

“Oh, hell, I don’t know. You?” Summer smirked.

“I know you do,” she murmured, combing out a tangle with her nails. “Do you know what next week is?”

“I hear it’s Valentine’s Day,” he smiled boyishly, “is there anyone in particular you want to spend it with?” Victor asked.

Teasingly, she said, “Ohhhhh, I don’t know … there’s some really cute guys at SHIELD I thought I might ask out … ” Then she stuck her tongue out.

Victor raised an eyebrow and growled at that thought. “Perhaps I should stop by and have a chat with these ‘cute boys’. Y’know, make sure they’re not murderers or anything.” Victor laughed a little, to try to mask the sudden pang of surprising possessiveness and jealousy that hit him in his gut.

“Shouldn’t play with your food,” she teased, more muscles relaxing under his caresses. There was something, as she’d noticed before, that was simply soothing about the way Victor was with her — everything seemed to fit together perfectly.

“My food…” he echoed softly, knowing right well that she was teasing. “Don’t go tempting me now darling,” he joked back. Victor looked up at the screen momentarily, the big battle was coming up, signalling the end of the movie was also near and he sighed. He pulled her in closer. “I have thoroughly enjoyed this evening Summer.”

“Mmmm, I agree entirely.” She scraped the last bits of popcorn out of the bowl, then turned her face up to kiss him briefly before pressing back and turning her gaze to the screen. “Victor, darling.”

Victor laid there in silence as they finished the rest of the movie and when it was over he stretched, almost as a cat would, before settling back down on the couch. “Did you like the movie?”

“Well, yes,” she laughed up at him, “I have seen it before.” Summer rolled back, putting a hand behind Victor’s head, stroking her fingers through the curling ends. “But I like to rewatch things I’ve seen before.”

Victor closed his eyes and hummed softly as she stroked his hair. “It is a good movie.” He hummed a little louder. “I love it when you do that darling.”

“I know you do,” she murmured, combing out a tangle with her nails. “Do you know what next week is?”

Summer declared, “I try. Can’t you see my halo?” She pointed above her head, cocking her head side to side. “Everyone always wants to assume the worst of me. Mrrrr.”

“Yeah, your horns are holding up your halo darling.” Victor snorted before patting her reassuringly on her arm. “I don’t think those are your worst qualities dear, I think they’re some of your more endearing qualities.”

“Ack! Horns? What horns? I’m a perfect little angel!” She groped around on top of her head, giggling.

Victor ruffled her hair a bit, teasingly. “My perfect little angel,” he paused for a moment to kiss her jaw, “is also my perfect little devil,” he said as he kissed her again. Experimentally, he ran his fangs over her skin, scraping lightly, just to see what kind of response he’d get.

“I thought we were watching a movie, Victor darling,” she said lazily, tipping her head to the side for him. A frisson ran up her spine. “Are you trying to distract me?”

“Mmmmm, we still are love,” he whispered, noting her reaction, running his fangs along her neck one more time before soothing the skin with his tongue. ” ‘M not trying to distract you, Summer, I just can’t help it. I like being near you, and I doubly like teasing you.”
