She traced her fingers lightly over the wood, feeling the grain of it under her fingertips, and picked up one of the pictures. “You look so fierce here,” she commented. Glancing up, she looked at the pile of kindling and wood Victor had assembled and flicked her fingers, adding a little spark to it. Then she put the photo down and crossed to loop her arms around his neck. “It’s much simpler if you let me do that,” she murmured, “Victor darling.”

Victor looked back at her to see what she was talking about but was momentarily surprised by her sparking the fire. “Hey-” He stopped then smiled down at her as she looped her arms around his neck. “I’m sorry, I’m just not used to seeing you use your talents Summer.” Victor rested his hands at her hips, rocking a little. “Which photo were you talking about love?”

“Don’t get used to it,” she murmured. “I like the surprise. It’s the one from when you were young.” She unwound herself and picked it back up, touching a fingertip to Victor’s face. “Anyway, I thought there was going to be a movie?”

Victor smirked a little at her response. “Well I guess it’s a good thing I like your surprises then.” His eyes saddened for a moment, thinking of his childhood friend. Jakober had been his only friend at the Institute and every now and again they saw each other but things had turned out too differently for them. Victor’s eyes brightened then, “Of course.” He turned around with the remote in hand and turned the fairly big TV hanging on the wall in front of the couches on, quickly launching Netflix. “Care for anything to eat or drink darling?” he asked while he scrolled through Netflix.

“Just tell me where the popcorn is,” she replied, starting to wander through the doorway. “And try not to pick anything in the horror genre. I’d like to sleep tonight.”

“The gallantry is cute, darlin’,” Summer laughed as she climbed out. She huddled by the door until he’d opened the house, then ran inside, shivering a little. She had to stop just inside the door, though, and fumble for the light switch. When the light came up she gazed around, a slow smile uncurling across her face. “Victor, this is really nice. Much better than last time.”

He grinned, proud. There were a lot more of his souvenirs from his travels posted on the mantle and sitting on the coffee table in front of the couches. The furniture was dark cherry colour and while the wood gave the furniture an almost antique feeling there was something subtly modern about the house. The lighting only added to that. The high ceilings made it difficult to fully light the rooms and they were forever in a cozy dim setting and were only amplified by a handful of lamps. There were very few pictures scattered around the place. There was one of him from the Institute, taken of him and his friend when they were 12, as well as a few pictures from college.

“Thank you darling,” he said as he made to help her out of her jacket. He hung their jackets up and put his hat on a hook before striding over to the fire place, which was almost perpendicular to the couches. “I’m going to start a fire to help warm this place up, make yourself at home.”

She traced her fingers lightly over the wood, feeling the grain of it under her fingertips, and picked up one of the pictures. “You look so fierce here,” she commented. “Wh—oh.” She’d let herself get distracted by the shinies from habit. Half a minute had her buckled in securely, before they’d even made it out of the parking lot. “Hold on tight, he says. Victor, darlin’, I drive a souped-up honda. Your pretty thing is not going to wow me. Not in uptown Manhattan, anyway. Now, maybe if we took a weekend up in the catskills or the hamptons, where you can let her out … ” She grinned at him.

Victor grinned back at her and shrugged. “I’ll have to take you out in her sometime then. She’s got this beautiful purr once you let her out.” His tone was almost wistful. He put the car in drive and headed off towards his house. The ride was fairly smooth, taking into account the many potholes that peppered the streets. They were at his house in a little under 15 minutes; he pulled up the driveway and parked the car. Before Summer had the time to get out Victor darted to the passenger side and opened the door for her.

Then he walked up the steps and opened the door to his house, which he had had a little more time to personalize. “Coming love?”

“The gallantry is cute, darlin’,” Summer laughed as she climbed out. She huddled by the door until he’d opened the house, then ran inside, shivering a little. That meant she had to get dressed. Bother. Dislodging Phoebe, Summer rolled herself off the couch to pull on a long skirt and long-sleeve shirt, then stuffed her feet in running shoes and went to sit on her steps.

Victor had run his fingers through his hair and put his dark grey flat cap before jumping into his black Audi A8. He sped off to her house, the car taking his speed easily. As he drove he put some music on, apparently Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata was playing; it was good enough so he left it on. By the time he arrived to her house the song ‘Secrets’ by One Republic was on. As he pulled up he saw that she was sitting on the steps and he quickly parked the car, left it running and went out to greet her. “Hey Summer, you ready?” he asked as he pulled her in for a hug and a kiss before staring down at her with adoring eyes.

“Ready as ever I’ll be, unless you want me to grab some of my movies.” She cuddled into his warmth, wondering again how a vampire came to be so warm. “I hate winter,” she grumbled. “Cold, damp, nasty.”

“If you want to bring some movies go ahead, dunno if you’d like mine anyways.” Victor chuckled at her dislike of the cold. “Well lucky for you it’s pretty warm in my house and I’ll start a fire once we get there.”

“There’s always netflix,” she muttered. “Come on!” She scrambled into the car, remembering to jerk her hair out of the way of the closing door, and ran curious fingers over all the buttons and gadgets. “If I didn’t like my del sol so much, I’d want one of these, I think. Maybe I should just remodel the inside of mine.”

Victor was momentarily surprised by her sudden burst to the car but laughed a little and got back inside his car. He smiled as she ran her fingers over all of the buttons, a distinct sense of pride emanating from him. Of all the cars he could buy, he’d chosen this one, it was his baby. “I’ve worked on this car a lot love. It’s become something of a passion. If you wanted help remodeling yours I’d be more than happy to help.” He moved to put the car in drive. “Do you want to put your seat belt on love?” It was a serious question. He didn’t bother anymore because it wasn’t necessary but he didn’t know if she wanted to use it. “Feel free to adjust the radio love…and hold on tight.” Victor added that last part with a devious smile ghosting across his lips.

“Wh—oh.” She’d let herself get distracted by the shinies from habit. Half a minute had her buckled in securely, before they’d even made it out of the parking lot. “Hold on tight, he says. iamvictor-roth replied to your post: There’s a knock at the door and a piece of paper tucked into the door but no one there. The writing was Victor’s quick, half cursive scrawl and it read: Ello Summer, Central Park looks nice this time of night and its not so crowded. Care to join me? His phone number was scrawled in the lower right hand corner in case she wanted to contact him.

Victor checked his phone and realized the foreign number was Summer’s. He added it to his phone. [text] Sorry, I don’t really feel the cold. Movie at my place?

[text] come pick me up
