“If it’s making you upset, it’s not minor,” she scolded. “But see, you have talked to me, and now you feel some better. Even if you’re just mostly laughing at my absurdism,” she said wryly. She patted his knee.

“Yes, I have a tendency to laugh at such things,” he shakes his head, still smiling. “My ‘family’ would not be very adept at handling matters of… the heart. Dummy, perhaps, but I highly doubt the others could.”

“Bless, darlin’, it’s just fine. I know I’m weird.” Summer smiled and headbutted his knee. “How about this. From now on, if you need to talk about emotions, you just call me. I’m good with emotions; I have to be. You don’t have to tell me any names, just as much as you feel like you can tell, and I will listen and be absurd for you.”

She deliberately curled up at his feet, perching her chin against his knee. “There’s some detail lacking there. It’s not okay to tell who you are missing? Or there is something particular about this person?”

“I would prefer not to go into details,” he says as he looks down at her. “I find that… I am hesitant to go into depth about my situation. And it is not as if this person has disappeared altogether, I am very aware of where they are and why I am unable to reach them. It is just that the more I see the others happy with those they love, the more I find myself wishing for them.”

“Will this person come back?” Summer made her voice as sympathetic as she could. “It would be very rough if you expected to deal with this ‘forever’.” She made finger-quotes. “You have other people that you care about, just not that way, right?”

“Oh yes, they will return by the end of the week. They have promised,” he glances down in amusement at her motions. “And yes, I have other people I care for. I simply do not wish to bother them with this minor problem.”

“If it’s making you upset, it’s not minor,” she scolded. “But see, you have talked to me, and now you feel some better. Even if you’re just mostly laughing at my absurdism,” she said wryly. She patted his knee.

Loneliness drives some of the most powerful of creativity. But why are you, of all people, alone? Where’s Tony? Where’s Dummy, and Butterfingers? Or is that the problem, that you are so used to being intimately connected with them, that it’s painful now you’re trapped in a bone cage?

*holds out a hand*

He laughs, shaking his head. Oh no, I am not human, I am still connected to the mainframe. However, Dummy has long since been turned human; and he is hardly the issue. No, I cannot connect to everyone, and… some can be far beyond my reach or view; as is the case now.

In that case, why don’t we sit down somewhere and you explain to me, because my assumptions are obviously all awry. Besides, one of the best cures for loneliness that I know is to have someone right there with you, paying attention to you.

He shrugs, walking over and taking a seat on a nearby chair. It is a simple matter, truly. I am missing someone. Someone who… for the moment is unreachable to me. I am seeing the… antics of those around me and finding myself… longing for their presence.

Some of us embrace them, darlin’.

It is all very well to speak of embracing emotions when they are causing you to feel well. It is another to speak of such things when are finding that they are currently leaving you discontent and saddened.

You’re right. But it is the essence of humanity, and of having emotions at all, to embrace the hard ones, because it can be those which bring out the greatest in us.

I am not so certain that loneliness is going to bring out the greatest in me. It simply leaves me… heartsick is a good term. Yes, it leaves me heartsick.
