She shrugged stiffly. “Just — you think I’m one of you, don’t you. You think I’m Fae.” She turned away, arms folded and holding her elbows in tight. “I’m not. I don’t belong with you either. I don’t /belong/ anywhere. Not human, not Fae, not mutant nor magician, not wholly anything.” She shook herself.

“Sorry. Sorry. Not relevant. Are you feeling okay now, better? Less hung out to dry by someone obviously not worth your time?”

A slight frown formed on the Mesmer’s face, listening to Summer’s words. He’d almost protested, but then he’d realized that it wouldn’t solve anything. She obviously didn’t know of the Fae; if she’d been one, if her family had been aligned with the Dark or the Light, she would have known. Even if she was classified as Fae, it was far too late in her life for her to choose a side, to be part of the Fae Community. “I’m sorry, Summer,” he told her with a bit of a sigh. He didn’t know what else to say, he wasn’t used to being the one that comforted the other.

Vex let her brush it away, though part of him wanted to keep talking about it. “Yeah,” he replied, “I’m feeling a lot better now. Thank you.”

“Good! I’m glad I could help, even a little.” A truer smile brightened Summer’s face. She picked up the lighter again, examining the design on it. “So … ” she fished around, “this is because of your night club?”

Summer took all that in. “And if someone who isn’t a guard bothers me? I’m assuming you don’t want me to hurt anyone trying to keep them off me.” There had been something in his emotions that she wanted to pursue, but she couldn’t isolate it, not with all the other people around. “What about /my/ powers?”

Vex nodded at Summer’s question, eyes leveling easily with hers in the light of the club. “If somebody’s bothering you, the guards know well to keep them off of ya. Don’t ‘it the guards,” he confirmed absently, sipping at his drink still. Her next question was an easy one to answer, “Your powers are a key to keeping you safe ‘ere, Summer. You’re more than welcome to using ‘em.. just not on ‘umans, if you can ‘elp it; the Fae’ll assume that you’re Fae, and that’ll be enough for ‘em to leave ya alone if they notice your powers.”

“I’ll just stick to the passive parts,” she decided. “Or maybe I’ll just hide back here the whole time!” She was only a little serious about that, leaning both elbows on the bar and looking out again. So many people; so many strangers.

“So,” she said after a minute, “rules? People I shouldn’t talk to, things I shouldn’t say?”

Vex was quiet as he complemlated her question. Then, he spoke up, voice bordering on light but still faintly stern, “Don’t mention the Light Fae ‘ere. Everyone’s Dark or ‘uman ‘ere. Aside from that, don’t flirt with any of the other Fae around ‘ere, they aren’t exactly safe people to be around to begin with.” He was telling the truth about the last part, but he had an alternate reason too; he really didn’t want to see her with another Fae. “If the guards bother you and I’m busy with something, tell ‘em that you’re ‘ere with me. Even if they don’t believe you, they wouldn’t risk causin’ trouble with me.”

Summer took a slow sip, though she could smell the coffee as soon as he offered it. She didn’t really like coffee, although this one was okay. She smoothed a hand over one hip, removing a non-existent wrinkle. “I’m glad you like it.”

Looking out over the floor, she remembered why she hadn’t been to a party in ages. It was crowded, everyone talking over one another, bumping into one another; the music was nearly inaudible despite being loud as hell. Her ears buzzed with the volume, and her head buzzed with the emotions. Gently she pushed the latte away after that one sip. “No alcohol for me tonight, I’m going to be higher than a kite anyway.”

Vex was a little disappointed that she didn’t enjoy the alcohol enough to share it with him, but he let the situation go. It wasn’t that big of a deal, really. At the mention of her being higher than a kite, he couldn’t help but be tempted to go find his pipe, or break out those old pill bottles. Neither was a good idea when he was around so many people, especially not with Summer with him. “Fair enough,” was all he said to her, a smile being granted to her as he leaned against the counter of the bar. He took a long sip of his alcohol, not sure what else to say.

“So,” she said after a minute, “rules? People I shouldn’t talk to, things I shouldn’t say?”

3. Me for one night.

Vex gave a sloppy, half-smirk in Summer’s direction as he told her, “Well, you ‘eard it, you got me for the rest of the night. So tell me…” His eyes glinted darkly as he finished his sentence, “What’d’ya want, lovely?”

“The universe wants us together. This is insane.” Summer started to laugh. “I should ask you to seduce me, but I don’t think you’re actually capable of that.”

“T’right,” Vex chuckled at Summer’s comment. He’d been thinking the same thing, but he hadn’t wanted to comment. Seemed almost too nice… Shrugging his shoulders, he asked with a purr to his voice, “Is that a challenge?”

“Would I do that?” she shot back. hands on her hips. She tossed her hair. “Anyway, this is absurd. I assume you enjoyed our tete-a-tete before, or you would have just blown me off entirely here. But you aren’t interested in me as a long term thing.”

Vex blinked, a little surprised at the silk dancer’s human’s words. He watched her for a moment before he asked in a sharpened, but kind voice, “And who said that I wasn’t, Summer? I’ve never once said that.” It was true, he hadn’t. Though he wasn’t really sure why he was saying it..

She tapped her temple. “I think I would know, Vex.” Summer shrugged, trying to pass it off as no big thing. She wasn’t /in love/ with Vex; fascinated by him, yes. By him, by the world he represented; the glimpses into a different sort of life than the one she’d led up til now.

Which, annoyingly, didn’t change the fact that she wanted to be seen as someone desirable. More than just … a fuckbuddy.

“I could hardly pass this up!” Summer sang out. “I haven’t been to a Halloween party in ages, and,” she gestured around, “I was curious to see if you guys celebrate it any differently.” She grinned, encased neck to toe in nearly skintight soft but sturdy canvas, dark blue and black and zipped up the front. A circular logo patch appeared on each shoulder, and two belts encircled her hips – one all little pouches, and one supporting two thigh holsters.

“I had the damnedest time deciding what to wear, too; wasn’t sure if you would want to see me in the leather or the bodysuit.” She winked.

Vex was glad to see that Summer had made her way to Carpe Noctem for the party. She didn’t usually go around the Fae-grounds that the Mesmer enjoyed, but every now and then, he convinced her to spend time in his territory. Smiling in her direction, he told her, “Nothin’ too different, love.” He took in the sight of her, a smirk appearing on his face as he leaned against the counter of the bar. “You look lovely,” he purred, tongue running briefly over his lips.

Nodding for her to come around to the other side of the bar where the drinks were kept, he offered her a drink of his spiked-latte. So far, the night seemed to be going off without a hitch. For that, he was glad; it had been a while since he’d got to celebrate.

Summer took a slow sip, though she could smell the coffee as soon as he offered it. She didn’t really like coffee, although this one was okay. She smoothed a hand over one hip, removing a non-existent wrinkle. “I’m glad you like it.”

Open ~ Halloween at Carpe Noctem

theyrecompletelymesmerized:

October Thirty-First.

Vex’s club was filled with people, some in costume and others not. The club’s lighting had been switched from its usual blue-tinted colors to a more autumn-esque type, making everyone’s features look a little orange. The club still held its usual Gothic-air, but it was even more blatant now, with fake cobwebs, candles, plastic spiders, jack-o-lanterns, and various other Halloween decorations. It was all the owner of the club’s doing, having decided to decorate the club this year. He’d sent invitations out to everyone he knew, with the hopes that he’d find some friendly company in the midst of it all.

And so, the Mesmer was relaxed behind the bar as usual, sipping at a pumpkin-spice latte that he’d mixed with Jager. It was an odd combination, no doubt, but he found it pleasing to the season. There was a whole new menu during October at Carpe Noctem, especially on Halloween night. There were a few dancers that he’d hired specifically for tonight as well, which had dressed in-costume (though they were closer to undressed than some had liked). He did his best to ignore them, being humans and all, but occasionally his eyes trailed over to them in his absent-mindedness.

In reality, Vex didn’t need to be at Carpe Noctem tonight. The bartender was there, the dancers were there, the servers were working the V.I.P. lounge, and there were plenty of security guards to keep the place functioning. It was his choice to show up, to help serve people at the bar, because he was far too into the holiday season to really be anywhere else. He hadn’t dressed up, but he was looking his best in his leather-clad outfit. Sipping at his drink, he smiled and glanced over as he saw somebody he’d invited stopping to talk on the other side of the bar. “Ello there, glad to see you could make it~”
