She trailed obediently behind him, huddling her hood up around her ears. The building was huge, not at all what she expected — but she wasn’t sure what she expected. She stuck very close to him as they went inside. Up the elevator. To the top? And then he pulled open the great metal door, and she stared at the huge window that met her eyes.

Derek waited for her to follow him inside before he shut the door behind her. His eyes looked to where she was staring, shrugging a little. “That window has been broken more times than I can count.” He went over to the kitchen and opened his fridge. “So, what do you want to eat?”

Summer had to peel herself away from the window to answer his question — it wasn’t like she could call over her shoulder to him. Ducking in beside him, she peered into the fridge, and swallowed hard. So many good things to eat. She gave Derek a questioning glance, and picked up an apple. She wanted to ask him something, many things, but here — it wasn’t as easy. Stepping back, she spotted a pad near the fridge and held it up to him.

She’s been waiting for this opportunity for a while, actually. Getting up her nerve to take the chance. Summer gently pushes Derek against the wall, tugs his head down, and kisses him. Then she lets go and walks away, seemingly quite calm.

Derek was just walking by when Summer’s body pressed into his, going back against the wall with a confused expression. He was surprised by the kiss, though he could smell her attraction to him sometimes, it’s not like there wasn’t some toward her either. He just didn’t expect that. Though it didn’t mean he didn’t enjoy it. He watched her walk a few steps before striding out and catching her wrist gently, pulling her back and spinning her, kissing her  again.

She nodded, smiling into the kiss, the faintest breath like a laugh escaping her. Both arms winding around his shoulders, she pulled him over on top of her.

Derek laid her down on the bed again, kissing her deeply, arms and legs tangled together on top of the sheets.

God, that made her feel safe; him hovering over her. Maybe others were frightened of him, huge and gruff and taciturn, but he’d saved her, and he was letting her kiss him and touch him with her power, and he was kissing her back — she couldn’t be afraid of him. She got a hand up under his shirt, fingertips dancing over his skin, breathlessly opening her mouth to him.

She slips into the car, buckling up and looking around. Something in the back of her mind tells her it’s a nice car, and she brushes her fingers over the radio console before sitting back. She spends a lot of time watching him as they drive, his hands on the steering wheel and gearshift, the way he pays attention to the road and the other drivers. There’s a moment when she senses the hunter, on the outer edge of her awareness, and freezes, barely breathing as they go by.

Derek kept his eyes on the road the entire time that he drove. He pushed on some music to help ease the silence between them. It wasn’t like she could say much anyways, but he couldn’t look over at her explaining herself when he was behind the wheel. It didn’t take long to get to his loft and he parked the car before he said anything. “We’re here.” He got out and started walking towards the place, expecting her to follow.

She gave him a little smile that crinkled her nose, the sort of smile that might ordinarily be accompanied by a giggle. Then she brushed him with her mind again, encouraging, and tugged against his shoulder.

Derek felt the little brush again, it felt like a tug. Or wait, was that the tug, her hand on his shoulder. Wait… Was it both? “That’s your gift isn’t it?” he asked with a small smile, dipping in to kiss her again as he put the pieces together.

She nodded, smiling into the kiss, the faintest breath like a laugh escaping her. Both arms winding around his shoulders, she pulled him over on top of her.

She pushed the hood back again to stare at him, embarrassment tinting her cheeks. Then she flung herself at him in a huge hug, radiating gratitude overwhelmingly.

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

She stopped looking out the rest of the way, thinking hard. She wondered if she was doing the wrong thing, dragging someone else into her problem — but he was a wolf! Surely he could take care of himself? And she was so tired of running.

When he turned the car off, she startled a little before shaking her head and climbing out, one hand braced on the side of the car. There didn’t seem to be anyone else around, and she glanced up the facade of the building, confused. Did he live here alone, just him in this huge building? That might explain why he said not to worry about repayment. He just didn’t strike her as a loner type.

Derek walked around the car to offer his arm, going to help her into the complex, seeing her staring at it. “You alright?” he asked, locking the car behind them and getting them inside and to the elevator quickly.

Summer linked her arm through his, turning her face into his shoulder for a moment before nodding. She managed to scribble, bracing the paper against the wall of the elevator, ‘there’s no one else here?’ Before she could show it to him, the elevator slid open to reveal a huge metal door.

Experimentally, she tried what he’d done with her a moment ago, slipping her tongue into his mouth. One hand curled up over his shoulder, and she tilted her head a little to deepen the kiss. When she felt him tense, she stopped, though she didn’t pull away. Did he not want — no, he wasn’t angry … maybe he liked it better when he was the aggressive one? She found she did, actually. She’d liked it very much when he was in charge.

Derek had tensed at the wrong moment. His own little tense had made her stop, so now they were just pressed face to face. He had to pull back, though he did so gently, to stifle his laugh, small and deep. “Sorry, it wasn’t the kiss. I felt … something,” he murmured by way of explanation. “Something from you. It surprised me a bit is all.”

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

She blew out a breath, hanging her head a little. Even if she could use them, there weren’t enough words in the world for how much she hated being this helpless. She inspected the protein bar at close range, then ate it, and another one, and drank most of the water. She wasn’t really paying any attention to the world going by the car, except once, as they were waiting at a stoplight.

Idly letting her mind range out, she brushed against the hunter. She jerked up to look out the window, eyes a little wild, pulling her mind back. But — she was with Derek. She was safe, right? He would protect her? She turned away from the window, locking her hands around the water bottle. And then the light changed, and they moved on.

Derek only glanced at her a couple of times to make sure she was eating, and thankfully she was. When she jerked in her seat, Derek turned to her again, a question on his face. He didn’t see anything, couldn’t smell anything in the car though that didn’t mean there was something outside of it he supposed. No matter, he just kept going when she didn’t turn to him or try to convey anything with the paper and pen he’d stuck in the car. He did speed up however, wanting to get to the loft sooner rather than later.

She stopped looking out the rest of the way, thinking hard. She wondered if she was doing the wrong thing, dragging someone else into her problem — but he was a wolf! Surely he could take care of himself? And she was /so/ tired of running.

The speed of his reaction surprised her; he’d been so cautious before. She turned the protein bars over in her hands, not confused by them, but just thinking. Thinking about the way she’d turned to fit herself in the car, and the way her hands had automatically reached for the seatbelt. Putting the bars down, she tried to twist the bottle’s cap off, but her hands were shaking too much. She bared her teeth at it, frustrated.

Derek saw her struggling with the bottle and the bared teeth. He was a wolf, bared teeth weren’t a good sign. As gently as he could, he laid one hand over hers on the plastic, the other gently sliding the bottle from her grip. “Don’t get frustrated. It’s alright.” He twisted the cap off and placed it back in her hand. “I’m here to help, I’m going to help.” He slipped one of the bars from her lap and peeled the wrapper open, placing it back on her thigh and then stepping back to close the door without another word. He walked around the front and slid in, buckling and starting the car.

Slowly, she leaned forward, hand sliding to cup his cheek, and fitted her mouth to his. Her other hand found one of his, and pulled it around her waist. Her kiss was slow and exploratory, this time, but not hesitant. Very gently, she brushed him with her gift, showing him what she was feeling: eagerness, desire, encouragement.

Derek leaned into the soft touch to his face, feeling a soft contentment when their lips touched again. He let her lead the pace of the kiss as he pressed forward more, still settled between her legs on the bed. When he felt the brush of her gift he tensed for a moment, curiosity washing over him, though not negative. Just pure wonder.
