She didn’t remember that. ‘I want to understand you then. you pulled away from me but you held me after bad dreams. you say I will stay but I don’t know why’ His expressions just seemed to be at such odds with his behavior — and with what she sensed from him. She couldn’t even decide if he liked her or just felt sorry for her.

‘I need to understand’

“I thought it would help,” he said softly, eyebrows together. “I’m not one who is used to company, but I am willing to try this with you. I want to make sure that you are safe. Can’t you see that?”

‘it did help. when you pushed me away it felt like distrust. how can you keep me safe if you don’t trust me?’ Slowly, so he could see every motion, she reached up and pushed her fingers against his frown, trying to smooth it away.

She pushed the hood back again to stare at him, embarrassment tinting her cheeks. Then she flung herself at him in a huge hug, radiating gratitude overwhelmingly.

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

She put her hands up to her face and blew a raspberry, one of the few noises she could still make easily. She didn’t even know why she couldn’t speak, just that any sound involving her vocal cords just … didn’t happen.

Just to be really irritating, because she was put out by the way her good morning mood had been ruined, she blew a raspberry on Isaac’s back, and then Derek’s stomach. Then she flounced out of the bed.

Derek chuckled, laughing as Isaac was ‘attacked’ and then jumped as he was in turn. He watched her get out of the bed and sighed, settling back. Isaac just mumbled, disgruntled by all the interruptions, and snuggled up to Derek.

Turning on her heel, Summer stamped off to take over Derek’s bathroom. She was just annoyed enough not to care that she had nothing to put on afterward, and made a valiant attempt at using up all the hot water, too.

She pushed the hood back again to stare at him, embarrassment tinting her cheeks. Then she flung herself at him in a huge hug, radiating gratitude overwhelmingly.

She tried again, brows drawing down, as her fingers tapped at her throat. When nothing came out again, she slumped into the pillow, heedless of the fact that she was still half draped over Isaac. After a moment she flopped over into Derek’s chest, staring up with a woebegone expression.

Derek watched but nothing else came out. He let her flop onto him, Isaac scooted up behind her and one hand gently on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay,” he assured, one hand stroking her hair gently. “It happened once. Maybe it’ll come back again.”

It might not be safe here, but it was safer. She would live with that. So after a long moment, she nodded. It took another long moment for her to remember where she’d left the notepad and pencil. ‘am I staying with you?’ A yawn caught her off-guard.

Derek’s eyebrows were together, his expression showing that he didn’t understand. “Yes? That’s why you are here. I told you that you could stay until we found you a place of your own.”

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

A tiny, tiny giggle escaped her at Isaac’s whine and wiggle, and then she paused, frowning in surprise and amazement. Lifting a hand to her throat, she tried to say something, but nothing came out.

Isaac wiggled until her hands lifted, and Derek’s head came up off the pillow as she giggled. His eyes went wide a bit as he grinned at her.

Derek was  a little startled at the sudden hug and rush of emotion, though he caught her and tentatively patted her back soothingly, still a tad bit stunned at the force of her gratitude but glad he could help and make someone feel so thankful.

Everything felt so good — blinking her eyes open slowly, being warm and relaxed, waking without a headache, not being alone. Derek’s little sound, pulling her closer, made her smile. Her feet were tangled with Isaac’s. Even her mind felt relaxed, not clenched in fear and desperate seeking.

So she shared that feeling with them — how nice the morning was, the simple happiness. Then her mouth quirked with mischief and she tugged away from Derek slightly to flop on top of Isaac, running fingers down his sides to find the ticklish spots.

Derek felt the feelings, a low rumble emitting from his chest, a pleased sound. Isaac, responding to the share and the noise, wiggled a little closer until Summer flopped on him. Derek rolled to his stomach to hug the pillow as Isaac whined, wiggling under her as her fingers skimmed over his ribs.

This felt right. Familiar. Someone curled at her back, guarding her from the things that went bump in the night. She smiled in the dark at that idea, that some of the things that went bump would protect her from other things. But then she knew that humans could be more monstrous than anything called a monster. Waiting for sleep to reclaim her, she stroked Isaac’s back lightly.

When she opened her eyes again it was morning.

Isaac had leaned into the touches, relaxing under them from Derek and Summer. Derek settled in and they all calmed and then fell asleep one by one. Isaac was out soon after Summer and then Derek was a little bit later.

The next morning, Derek felt Summer stir and grumbled lowly, snuggling a little closer as Isaac snuffled in reaction, rolling over and nuzzling into his pillow.

She patted the space to either side of her, looking small and lost all alone in the big bed. When they climbed in, she laid down on her side again, and hesitantly reached out to put an arm over Isaac’s waist. As her fingers brushed his skin she flinched away, reaching to grab Derek’s arm instead and pull it around her own waist. Then tentatively she tried again with Isaac.

Derek and Isaac complied and crawled back in, getting set how they’d been before. Isaac felt a little hand brush him but jump back, holding still and hiding his face in the pillow. He could feel her hesitation.

Derek, when bid to, scooted forward and curled himself around Summer’s back, arm around her waist loosely, easy touch. As her hand slid out for Isaac again, Derek’s went also, gently touching Isaac first, calming his own nerves. He had a history he hadn’t shared with Summer yet, but Derek knew it, and gave the contact to relax him, so Summer wouldn’t get that anxiety. Isaac relaxed into the bed under Derek’s hand, welcoming Summer’s hand next.

When he said Isaac’s name, she started, eyes falling shut. Her senses felt raw and abused, but she reached out all the same, lightly touching both werewolves with her mind before she sagged forward in Derek’s hands. Safe. She was safe, it was just a dream.

Relaxing her grip, she put her hands around Derek’s wrists for a moment, trying to slow her breathing and heartbeat, then looked up and gave him a wan smile. She climbed back on the bed, fastidiously straightening the covers, before giving each werewolf a pleading look.

Isaac took a tentative step forward as Summer slumped into Derek. Derek for his part just held her and let her hold his wrists and breathe. When she got back up, he and Isaac just watched.

When she finally gave them both that look, Derek tugged Isaac by the front of his boxers, making the elastic pop against his hip. He yelped and Derek smirked as they both shuffled back to the bed. “Okay, we’re here. How do you want us?” he asked softly, giving her a gentle smile, Isaac rubbing his hip with a pout, though he wasn’t hurt. Just mad Derek had got him first.

It was the breaking of the silence that woke her fully. Not her name, so much as simply a voice, shredding the haze of nightmare. She clutched at Derek’s arms, eyes fixed to his face, panting still. Her heart thundered in her ears, pounding almost painfully hard.

When Summer finally came back to, her fingers digging almost painfully at Derek’s arms, he talked to her calmly. “I’ve got you. It’s alright. It’s just Isaac and I. You’re safe. You’re fine,” he assured, hands sliding to cup her face.
