Send “Auction” for your muse buying mine as their slave

Derek snarled lowly but kept his head down as he was transferred to the person that bought him, seeing a small female form before him now.

The key hung there from her hand, as she listened to him calmly. When he wound down, she let it go, sliding back out of sight behind fabric. “I can’t buy your loyalty with your freedom, then, hm?” She clasped her hands back together, eyes flicking to gaze out the window as they left the city behind abruptly.

“I … your kind aren’t the only preternatural creatures in the world, you know. Some of us hide more easily among mundanes.” Her gaze snapped back to his. “Some of us don’t hide. I’m trying to change things. The laws that make it possible for us to be kept as slaves, for one. It’s dangerous, and I can’t keep watch in all directions at once /and/ do the work.”

“You can’t buy loyalty,” he said, teeth bared again. “It’s earned. You can buy service.”

He listened with a cynical ear but understood what she meant. With a scowl out the window now he just shrugged. “I told you. You can buy service. I’m yours if I like it or not.”

“An unwilling bodyguard is worse than no bodyguard at all.” The comment hung there, as the limo turned up a shaded drive and came to a halt. Over the quiet sounds of the driver turning off the car and getting out, she said, “If I uncuff you, will you undertake to stay and do as you’re told for 24 hours?”

“I need a bodyguard,” she said softly. She clasped her hands together, one foot swinging, and watched him with narrow eyes. “I need someone I can totally rely on, who won’t leave me, or sell me out.” After a moment, she fished a cuff key on a chain from between her breasts. “Keep me safe, and I’ll set you free.”

“If you set me free I’d have no reason to stick around and keep you safe. Keep you safe from what? Isn’t there someone you can hire or are slaves a better investment. How free do you mean when you say free? Off the collar or free of you and any other master?” he shot back in a low, even voice, eyes still hard. He’d seen too much abuse to no be suspicious. Of everything.

Her mouth twitched again, and laugh lines showed around her eyes. “Well, yes. And why did I buy you? You, specifically.” She kicked at the chain between his wrists. “I require my slaves to answer properly when asked. Derek.”

Derek hissed when she kicked the chain between his raw wrists. He pulled back, glaring hard at her and baring his teeth, spitting out an “I don’t know why you bought me.”

“Derek.” After a moment she sat back, relaxing. “It suits you. Do you know why you’re here?” She tossed the collar carelessly into a corner.

“Because you bought me.”

She reached up — way up — and rapped one cheekbone sharply with two fingers. “One growl you get. Not two.” She led him out to the limo, gesturing him into the back of it before sliding in herself. “Home, Edward,” she called. As the car moved away from the market, she reached out and removed the collar from around his neck.

“There, that’s better. Have you got a name, or shall I just assign you one?”

Derek had to resist snapping his teeth at the fingers that rapped on his cheek. He didn’t look at her but followed the way she led and slid into the car. He didn’t move once he sat down but he answered “Derek” shortly when asked.

“Derek.” After a moment she sat back, relaxing. “It suits you. Do you know why you’re here?” She tossed the collar carelessly into a corner.

Summer’s lips twitched at the sound of the growl. So, he still had spirit. Good. She’d paid for her purchase and signed all the papers; this was merely the formal taking possession. She appreciated his attempt to keep his gaze down, as well, though it was a bit silly in light of the difference in their heights.

She accepted the chain — again, silly, but part of the formalities. “Come along, boy,” she ordered.

Derek watched the chain change hands and at the command he let out another growl but followed. He knew the punishments. His wrists rubbed raw from cuffs, his neck with the end of the chain, a metal collar around it.

poor little mute girl

She huddled the cloak closer around her and hurried her steps, feeling the hunter ease his way nearer to her. It was like a blank space in the mass of people she had hoped to lose herself in. Sweat rolled down her back under the cloth, but if she so much as pushed the hood back he would spot her. She couldn’t take that risk.

She couldn’t remember how long she’d been running. There were a lot of things she couldn’t remember. Who she was, for starters. She knew her own name — part of it, anyway. She knew why the hunter wanted her, too.

She didn’t know how she’d lost her memory, or why she couldn’t speak.

She dodged sideways into a little alley running between two stores and leaned against the wall, panting. A shadow fell over her, and she jumped, staring up wide-eyed at the dark figure in front of her.

Dimitri was working in the store that night. He was pretty irritated with rude Americans, but he supposed he was intimidating enough to make men angry and women envious. He didn’t speak much, always listening and then reporting them to what they wanted.

The teenagers that frequented the store liked to do things in hopes to get a reaction from the tall dark and brooding Russian. They really got him worked up today. He felt like he needed to punch something.

As he left the store through the back entrance he found a girl, cowering in his shadow. He looked down, she looked so scared. “Hallo,” he said gently. “Ahre yoh lohst?” he asked, blinking at her. He may look imposing and scary, but he had a good disposition, he was always gentle with women, girls especially and even more so with ones that look like her.

Summer tried to press herself through the wall, gazing up at the man. His heavy accent took her a moment to decipher, since half her brain was caught up with the strangeness of the sense of him. He tasted … wild. Not like caveman wild, but like a wild animal, a little shy, a little dangerous. She let out a slow breath, and shook her head.

Summer frowned up at him. “Hey, are you okay?” Adam never really /looked/ happy, but what she felt from him right now — it worried her.

He cocked a brow. “Okay? Such a mediocre word isn’t it? yes, I am okay and fine, and dandy etc etc.”

Her frown creased deeper. “That’s not a very good lie. What’s going on?”

Sighing, he let his head fall back. “The weight of years,” he muttered. “They set upon my shoulders like the world upon the back of Atlas.”

“Oh dear.” Summer chewed on her lip, still frowning up at him. “Do you want to talk about it?”
