Merlin?

*looks up from the book he’s reading and smiles* Hey, Summer. What’s going on?

He sighed. I’ll try to let it go, but if this happens again to you or anybody else, I will have a word with Arthur about this. If we can’t trust knights to respect the people, how can we trust them to protect them? And please don’t stick your head in the horse trough. He smiled slightly as he got an idea to try and distract her. Let’s go for a walk.

“Maybe if I stick my head in a horse trough I’ll be less embarrassed about just talking to you about this at all,” she moaned, but went over to him anyway, drooping onto his shoulder. “Okay, we can take a walk.”

He wrapped his arm around her and smiled slightly. Come on. We can walk in the woods a bit. It should be nice out there right now.

Summer let Merlin lead her out of his room and into the little patch of forest. “Honestly,” she sighed, “sometimes I wonder why I don’t just go back home and become a dried up old maid.”

Unless you specifically tell me that you don’t want me in your life anymore, I think you’re stuck with me at this point, he tried to grin reassuringly but ended up smiling awkwardly at Summer.

“Oh, fuck, Merlin,” she groaned, turning away and putting her head against the wall. “Just let it go, please? Pretend I never talked to you about this. I’m just … going to go stick my head in the horse trough now.”

He sighed quietly. I know… He was a bit surprised when Summer pulled away, but he soon realized how awkward that might have felt. I’m sorry. I wish I knew of some way to help you.

“Merlin, I — you — just — ” She stopped hard, and had to clear her throat. “Please don’t say that. Okay. Because I might say something stupid, and I don’t want to say something stupid, and I don’t want to do something stupid. I can’t lose you as a friend.”

He gently rubbed her back as he listened to her, clueless about what to say at first. Listen to me, he replied softly. You are not a failure. You will find someone someday, someone who will love you with all of their heart and whom you will love with all of yours. It will be worth the wait.

She nodded, face still hidden in his shoulder. “Patience is hard,” she muttered. “I want someone now.” Summer forced herself to pull away from Merlin, realising that if she kept leaning on him, in this kind of conversation, things would start being awkward very quickly.

As a matter of fact, you ARE that important, he insisted, walking over to her and draping an arm across her shoulders. He sighed slightly. Look, what happens or doesn’t happen between you and Gwaine is nobody’s business but yours and his. Nobody should be sticking his nose in where it doesn’t belong.

Summer turned her face into his shoulder and burst into tears. “I shouldn’t care so much,” she whispered. “I know they’re just idle gossipers, they’ll talk about anyone who comes along, and it might not have been me. If anybody can know these things it’s me, but I just want to be — ” She stopped, and gulped hard, sniffling gracelessly.

“You don’t love me,” she said at last. “I want to meet someone here who sees /me/, and loves me, everything, all the things you know, and I’m such a failure.”

“It wasn’t — ” She flushed. “I don’t know the person who said it, I just know it was someone … I think he’s a knight.”

Merlin nodded. Alright. I may need to have a word with Arthur about his knights’ lack of respect, then.

“Merlin — please don’t. Just — it doesn’t matter. I’m not that important, really. After all, it’s not like they were wrong … ” She rubbed at her face, trying to hide the tears about to fall. “Really, they’re right, I — Gwaine isn’t going to — I mean, just — ” She stumbled to a stop, swallowing hard.

“It doesn’t matter, really … just something about how stupid someone was, and couldn’t they see that they weren’t going to get what they wanted, and how painful it was to watch that kind of thing. It wasn’t — I mean, the person I was talking to didn’t say it, it was someone else, someone I know they’re friends with — it doesn’t matter, Merlin.”

Summer, if it hurt you, then it matters. That was incredibly disrespectful, and you shouldn’t have to stand for it, even if they didn’t think you could hear it. Do you know who said it?

Of course I would. Why, did something happen?
