She lifted an eyebrow as she looked at the other girl, she was worried. But she wasn’t going to show it. ”What was all that about anyway?”

“You dumped a lot of anger, and I wasn’t doing a thing to shield it out. It’s gotta go somewhere, hon.” She flopped over, trying to get the muscle that had been spasming to stretch out. “The convulsions are the default result.” Into the cushions, she went on, “I hurt you, I pushed too hard, so I paid for it.”

She sighed as she laid down on top of her, her head on Summer’s lap, ”I have better control of my anger than that, still it was wrong for me to have lashed at you like I did.” She said folding her hands on top of her stomach.

“You have better control of the display,” Summer corrected. “Doesn’t stop you from feeling it, let me assure you. You could have the best poker face in the world, and be bubbling like a fucking volcano inside where nobody but me would know. And it’s not like I have to go fishing around for it; I’d have to work to keep it /out/, in fact.” Brushing at Deva’s hair, she added, “Thank you for apologising. I’m sorry I pushed you so hard.”

She shrugged, closing her eyes and leaning into Summer’s hand. Being petted being a large weakness, ”I told you it’s fine, just don’t tell anyone you have seen me this relaxed, I have a reputation to keep intact.”

Summer laughed. “I’ll keep your secrets, never fear, little sister. You’ve given me so few, it won’t be hard.” She kept stroking, running random locks through her fingers.  ”Are you truly Loki’s daughter?”

Oh, come on! The only way you would change a long-standing habit like that would be for someone special. Someone your age, forgive me, wouldn’t normally just change their mind about something they’ve done as protection for so long.

I don’t really—I haven’t changed much. Really. It was just that when you don’t have friends you miss out on even the little things, like a hug or a pat on the shoulder. Just—those kinds of little things. Those are the only things that are new, and I didn’t need Steve to— *she cuts off and looks down, shaking her head and chuckling at her own expense* Okay, so now you do know that there’s someone special. Me and my big mouth. *she chuckles again* Still, I mean it. It’s just little things like hugs, I would have gotten those even if Steve and I weren’t… *What are we exactly? she thinks as she trails off*

*grins at her* You’re pretty serious about him. Steve. Pretty common name, that one. Could be anybody. But not to you, I see.

“Oh, well, I cheat.” She flashed him a smile that dared him to question. “Now, you said you had an appointment. Yes or no?”

“I-er- yes Miss.” he fumbled, quite certain he didn’t dare to question. “At 2:52, actually.”

“Well that’s interestingly precise!” Reaching behind herself, Summer extracted her keys from the strap of her purse, and beckoned. “Let’s go. You set the gps while I get us out into traffic.” She let him to a little targa-topped burgundy car, popping both doors. “And on the way, you can tell me a little more about yourself.”

“Alright, Miss Summer,” he nodded, climbing into the passenger seat only after Summer had already slid in. “I can’t thank you enough for this, really. You didn’t have to. I mean it was very- Is this a touch screen, or no?” he inquired, suddenly sidetracked by the GPS he was unable to work. “I’m lousy with these things. I don’t even keep a cell phone…”

“Tap with your fingernail,” she instructed. “How in the world do you manage without a cell phone? I don’t even keep a landline anymore!” She paused a moment after starting the car to wind her hair up in a fist-sized bun and stick a couple clips in it. “Time for aggressive driving.”

She hissed as she pulled her closer, slowly rocking her, humming slightly, ”It’s ok breathe, relax, focus on me,” She whispered, her eyes turning a dark shade of green as she ran her fingers though Summer’s hair.

That was the last bad one, and it only took a few minutes for Summer’s breathing to ease back to normal. She buried her face in Deva’s knee, brushing away the tears. “I’m okay now,” she said raggedly, sitting up and shoving hair out of her face.

“Oooh.” Summer’s eyes rounded at the flood of relief Lex felt. “Your magic is … really different from mine. It’s literally part of you physically, isn’t it. That’s amazing.”

She knelt carefully beside Lex, watching over her. “You’re going to be okay now. That’s one worry eased, right? So now you can go be honest to Magnus, and be able to protect yourself. Right?”

Lex gave her a weak smile. “Exactly. That’s why I felt so empty and hollow when that bastard cursed me.” She was adapting to her new old self, and let out a sigh of relief. Finally she would be able to do something again.

Carefully, she stood up, stretching her arms and legs. However, her look turned sad again when Summer mentioned Magnus again. “He… he wants to commit suicide.” The edge of exasperation was there again. “I don’t want him to do that, but he doesn’t want to listen. I… I could make him forget everything, but I won’t do it without his agreement.” She also thought of Maria, who was all too willing to forget, but it was simply the wrong time.

“Making holes in peoples’ memories is usually more trouble than it’s worth,” Summer commented dryly. “You’ve gotta find him a reason to live. Or at least a reason not to go chasing those shadows.” She shoved herself up to her feet, watching Lex. “Having been down that far myself, I assure you it is not going to be easy.”

Thinking back to her own past, she added, “Sometimes you have to hammer at them for years before things change. Do … you want my help?”

She sighed and moved to sit on the couch, bringing Summer’s body into her lap, ”I should be the one apologizing, I shouldn’t have snapped on you for helping me, I just have so troubles I haven’t gotten past.”

Summer patted whatever part of Deva’s body was closest to hand. “‘s okay. ‘m here f’r you.” Another muscle spasm warped her body, spine arching into a bow. “F-fuck,” she swore, tears sliding down her face.

And that’s exactly what I mean … to have someone to let down all the facades with. We need that, to not have to watch our words, not have to wear contacts or whathaveyou. *she cocks an eyebrow* So, want to tell me about this … special person?

Yeah. *she nodded with a smile* It’s been nice, since I’ve stopped pretending. I do love being able to be myself with others.

W-what? *she grows a little flustered, a faint blush lightly dusting her cheeks* Who said that I have anyone special?

Oh, come on! The only way you would change a long-standing habit like that would be for someone special. Someone your age, forgive me, wouldn’t normally just change their mind about something they’ve done as protection for so long.

Marie walked back into the apartment, her moment of anger faded. Pushing her boots against the wall she walked over to where Summer was and sat on the floor. Her gun on the table.

Through the bone-twisting spasms, Summer heard the door open and close again. She fought her eyes open to see Deva sitting down on the floor beside her, and a hissed breath escaped. “S-sorry … “

She sighed and moved to sit on the couch, bringing Summer’s body into her lap, ”I should be the one apologizing, I shouldn’t have snapped on you for helping me, I just have so troubles I haven’t gotten past.”

I had this idea of myself as a shy, kind, sweet chap. I was working with Winona Ryder and she turned to me and said, “Fuck, man, you’re really intense!” I was so shocked, I went, “What do you mean? I’m not intense, I’m sweet!” My passion and energy get mistaken for anger. —Gary Oldman
