”Ohhhhh …” Summer worked her fingers into Humphrey’s hair, tugging gently. “Your hands … ” Need mounted in her body, heat sliding through every pore. She melted into Humphrey’s arms, unable to hold herself up any longer, beginning to moan in rhythm with his fingers.

“Actually, I haven’t, but I pick up things quickly, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll never be on /your/ level, obviously, but I expect I can come to grips with the basics in short order.” Summer went over to the computer and peered at the screen for a moment before kneeling down to get a good look at the box. “You need to clean this poor machine, Doctor.” She grinned up at him.

He laughed lightly, moving past her and to where he was behind his desk initially. “It’s fairly simple stuff. I just need the results written into the notebook there.” He gestured to the black-covered notebook resting beside the computer on the desk. “When it’s finished I can show you the organization.” When she knelt down beside the computer, a confused look flashed across his face, and he shook his head with a small smile when she turned to face him. “I’ve never been good with the maintenance of this stuff. That’s more Tony’s area.”

“I’ll come in late some night when things aren’t so busy and dismantle it for cleaning.” It was more a declaration than a question, really. “Shall I just watch while it runs, then, or is there something I can be working on in the meantime? Filing, typing up notes, organising, running errands, fetching coffee? Maybe another program I can be learning while this one runs?” Summer shoved herself up off the floor, dusting her hands off. “Listening to you ramble while you work things out?” She threw him a wink for that one.

He raised an eyebrow but shrugged it off. “You don’t have to wait until after hours, you know. If you’re concerned about being in the way or something of the sort you don’t have to worry about it.” He did a second scan of the lab, his fingers dragging lightly against the top of the metal lab desk. Gesturing toward a few piles of stacked papers, he smiled a bit sheepishly. “Those could use some filing. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while now, but I keep putting it off.”

Summer picked up the stack and started flipping through them, walking over to the filing cabinet. “Taking down a computer system always happens after hours, because otherwise it’s expected to be in use. Nothing to do with being in the way.”  Starting at the bottom, she started putting papers away. “Anything you think of for me to do, let me know. I’ll shut up now.”

“Has anybody offered to, I don’t know, show you around? Or did they just sort of leave you to your own devices?” Sticking her finger into the cream cheese, she swirled it around and licked it off like a little child. “I’d really like to be able to spend some time with you.”

“Pretty much the latter, yeah. I guess no one likes hanging out with an ‘old man’.” he chuckled, amused by his little joke, and further amused by Summer’s actions. “I’d like that.”

Popping straight up in her chair, she exclaimed, “You are not an old man!” Her eyes flared green with indignation. “It’s not your fault you happen to be a tourist in your own city right now. This is going to change. What do you want to see first?” Summer bit off a piece of cheese danish as if it was one of the people who were neglecting Steve and chewed vengefully.

“What lead?” Summer asked. “What /lead/, my lord? Am I not already there? What then will you have me do? I cannot leave your city, my lord, for that there is no one to escort me. I cannot stay, seeing you every day.” She pulled away, rising and taking a few strides along the shore. “If there is no hope — and you say there can be none, which I must believe — then I would you did not know. ‘Twould be simpler.”

Whirling, she looked at Henry. “Am I to have no choice at all?”

He looked at her.

“I mean that I would lead you to something that I know not what it is.” he said to her, “To have you grow such emotions for me, when I… I do not know my own yet, I do not recognise them. Perhaps it is best that we leave such things alone, for I do not seek to break your heart…”

And he sighed.

“Though I fear I already have.”

“Perhaps you should have thought of that before you treated me with such kindness. Certainly before you kissed me. Why, then? I will know why.” In her anger and frustration, tears spilled down her cheeks. “My lord, I asked not even a chance, and yet you offered one, and now take it away.”

He looked at her and put his hand on her face, concerned and upset at how she was reacting to his words, “This is why I wished to say nothing, and my mind did tell me to not kiss you… to not touch you… and to not wish you within my arms, but… I could not listen to it, I could not hear upon those words.”

“Your every action belies your speech.” Despite her tears, anger emboldened Summer; she clasped his hand with one of her own, and reached up to brush his face with her fingertips. “Henry. Answer me. Why, last night? I thought it a dream. But you tell me ‘twas reality. /Why/?”

She pulled away from his insistent kisses. “I wish to take my time with you, my lord. Not in haste, but in leisure.” Stretching up to his ear, she murmured, “This is my demand for your long absence. I’ll not be taken like the wenches you tumble in alehouse and hayloft, but as the lady you treasure.” Summer slipped out of his arms deftly, leaving only her fingertips in his. “Do those pretty words mean anything, my lord? I’ll have you prove it so.” Very deliberately, she lowered her eyelashes, looking up at him through them. “Come, are there yet no pillows we might lie on, since you have returned?”

“Oh love, believe me I want to take my sweet time with you as well…” He pulled her close once more, raising her chin with his hand to face him. “I do not take wenches in alehouses pushed against the wall, and I took no one since I met you. I want no other but you.” He placed a light kiss on her lips. “Come, darling Summer.” He held her hand firmly. Leaving the room, the squire still stood there, waiting. “Tell the sirs not to wait for us, we shall catch up if we wish to,” he told him and the squire was gone. He said nothing to her all the way up the stairs but held her hand firm, walking down the corridor as he led her into his chamber.

He opened the door and let her in, closing the door behind them. The house was empty and silent, the loud riders making their way out on the other side. They were in what appeared to be a sitting room, with benches, table and pillows on the floor by the window to lay on, bookshelves and even a harp though Humphrey regarded himself rubbish at playing it and thus never did. The walls were covered by silk tapestries and the windows adorned with rich velvet curtains, as they offered the view of the river. One of the walls had a large two sided door now open to his bedchamber, his bed all made and covered with blankets and pillows. “As you see, pillows I have plenty,” he whispered in her ear, as he placed arms around her waist and pulled her close to himself from behind while she stood looking around. “I have none to share them with unless you share them with me, for I will not share with any other.”

“Mmm, I like this much better indeed.” Summer leaned back into his hold, into the warmth of his body. “It must be so hard for you, to wait for a lady to succumb to the persuasion of your mouth and tongue. Denying yourself even the slightest pleasure but holding out only for her … ” She laughed, low in her throat, and linked her fingers in with his hands around her body, drawing them upward over her stomach and to her breasts.

“What wilt thee, now that my wish is so near to fulfilled, love? Shalt kiss me breathless til I swoon, as did downstairs? Shalt give thyself over to my hands for pleasure?” A half-turn of hips let her reach up to draw light fingertips down his throat, a sly smile curving her lips. “Sweet lord, if thou sought a maid, thine arrow has missed the mark.”

The moment Humphrey’s tongue touched the hollow behind her ear, her head rolled back, eyes sliding closed. Luck, it must have been, to lead him to that spot that rendered her boneless so easily. “Oh, Humphrey,” she moaned helplessly, drawn out when his hand found her breast. As he progressed farther, Summer was forced to link her arms around his neck simply to stay upright, and her breathing became increasingly shallow.

“Beloved,” she whispered, exerting as much control as she could under the circumstances, “I shall fall … “
