If she had been paying attention to people’s physical presence, and not the increasing pressure inside her own head, Summer would certainly have retreated back to her original corner after getting a refill. Never mind that it was starting to swirl with more people as well; strangers were easier far to deal with than Tony Stark.
Well, in one way, anyhow. She didn’t tend to have crushes on random strangers, after all. But no, she’d walked right next him, screwdriver in hand, to lean her forehead against the wall in hopes that the coolth would help suppress her oncoming headache.
The minute he spoke to her, her feelings would probably be obvious to anyone with an eye.
It was a crime, really, that the person running the bar didn’t know what Death in the Afternoon was. He could surely use one, or seven. But he would have to stick with what the bartender knew, seeing as they wouldn’t let just make something for himself. They also followed the whole ‘no straight shots’ rule, he could tell. A splash of water just to make sure no one got too plastered.
Obviously they’d never heard of Tony Stark before.
Though he wasn’t expecting someone to just walk right up beside him without actually saying anything to him. That was definitely new.
Summer pressed her glass against her forehead at a particularly nasty throb. It was rapidly becoming clear that the only way to ease this headache was going to be to leave; the tension of shielding was just as bad as the emotions swirling among the crowd. She turned, meaning to set her glass down and seek the exit — and a roaring filled her ears, darkness overwhelming her sight. She felt the glass slip from her fingers as her knees gave way, both girl and glass crashing to the floor at Stark’s feet.
Falling
It had happened so easily that at the time, for a split second, it had scared him. How quickly he had reached for the tumbler and scotch, slamming down one after the other. He’d made the mistake of remembering, of taking that damned trip down memory lane. Then again, by the time he had realized it was a bad idea he was already on his 6th glass and working on more. Even when he was human it took a considerable amount to get him drunk but he didn’t know how his vampirism would affect his tolerance. Victor lost count of how many glasses he had had. Bottles were strewn about and for the life of him he couldn’t drown out the memories. He couldn’t drown out the blood; he was soaked in it and so was her dress. How long ago was it? 5 years? 10? A lifetime? He was too far gone to remember anymore. Shakily he got up and started to make his way up the stairs to his bedroom but stopped in the hallway when he saw his reflection in a mirror. He looked like shit. Victor squinted and took a step closer to the mirror only to trip, and hit his head hard on the marble table lining the wall. Apparently he’d had enough to drink to dull all of his reflexes and soon the darkness took over his sight.
For the first time, Summer was headed to Victor’s house. Given his address, it was easy to get there, and she sang contentedly along to her music during the drive. She was hoping to surprise him, though how easy that would be she didn’t know.
As it turned out, it was easy. Terrifyingly easy.
She’d probed a little bit, before she even got out of the car, since she’d actually expected him to come outside when she drove up. The sense of his unconsciousness startled her, and she flung herself into the house, jaw dropping at the sight of so many bottles. Could vampires get alcohol poisoning? Was that why he was unconscious? “Shit,” she swore, under her breath.
When she finally found him, untidily sprawled on the floor, it was almost a relief. Getting him anywhere else would be a pain, but he didn’t appear to have choked on vomit or anything. Did vampires bleed? Damn, there was too much she didn’t know! She knelt beside him, brushing hair away from his face. “Victor, darling?” she said softly.
