Even now, under the weight of it all, his voice still shot a shiver down her spine. “Having you there would be more appreciated than I can express. Please come with me. Come with and keep me sane. And hold me. Just,” her voice cracked again, “hold me.” She felt like she was falling, wished she was falling, flying, anywhere but here. “Make me not think.”

“Ok, love, whatever you want. I’ll be there for you Summer, I’ll do my best to keep you sane.” Victor planted a kiss on her nose, forehead, jaw, cheeks and eyes. “What do you want me to do? What can make you not think about it, love?”

“I don’t know.” It was nearly a wail. She struggled to keep from breaking down a third time. “God, Victor, I don’t know!”

Victor didn’t know what do to exactly, or what she wanted but he leaned in and kissed her lips. He lazily licked at her lower lip and put as much comfort and kindness into the kiss as he could, nothing about it sexual. Then he pulled her down so that they were laying next to each other; well, her more on top of him than anything. He kissed her again, focusing on giving her strength, on being her rock.

Summer curled into him, clinging tightly, kissing him back. Both arms went round his neck, one hand sinking into his hair. His warmth was a solid bulwark at her back, his love a solid strength in her mind. Wherever he’d come from, whyever they’d come together, so quickly, whatever it meant — right now it meant the thing she needed to hold on to herself. “Your /mouth/, darling,” she whispered.

Falling

“/Six/?” Summer gaped at Victor. “You fucking IDIOT. You — you — ” She couldn’t even find the wherewithal to swear at him, she was so shocked. “That’s not a problem, Roth, that’s practically suicide. Gods give me strength, /why didn’t you tell me about this sooner/?” Her voice vibrated with suppressed emotion.

She put her hands down on the floor, bracing herself while she took deep breaths. Heat moved under her skin, begging to be let out. “Get up.” She moved smoothly to her feet in one motion. “Get up, and lean on me. I’ll — I’ll deal with that later. Right now, you are getting in the bath, and I am sobering you up.”

Victor cringed a little at the use of his last name. He realized how pissed off she was, and honestly it hadn’t been this bad in a while but it scared him that a memory could do this to him. He clawed at the wall he was slouching against until he was leaning heavily on the wall. He reached a hand out for Summer’s shoulder, a sudden wave of light headedness overcoming him but he managed to stay standing. Victor took a few more steps, still bracing a good portion of his weight on her. “Bathroom’s up tha stairs, firs’ door on tha lef’.”

“Right.” Pressing her lips together, she maneuvered the two of them up the stairs, and into the bathroom. “Do I have to undress you, or can you do that?” Summer planted her hands on her hips, eyeing him narrowly.

Summer sighed. “I haven’t been home in months, Victor darling. I’ve got to go down for the funeral, though. The funeral, the wake, the viewing, god. The only way I’m going to survive it is drugs.” This sigh was bitter, and she blinked another tear away. “Tell me you love me, Victor,” she whispered. “Tell me how much you love me.”

Victor was surprised for a moment but leaned in by her ear, “I love you, Summer. I love you very much and I’ll never stop.” He punctuated each word with a tender kiss to her jaw. “I’d offer to go with you for support but I don’t want to intrude on something like that.”

Falling

For the first time, Summer was headed to Victor’s house. Given his address, it was easy to get there, and she sang contentedly along to her music during the drive. She was hoping to surprise him, though how easy that would be she didn’t know.

As it turned out, it was easy. Terrifyingly easy.

She’d probed a little bit, before she even got out of the car, since she’d actually expected him to come outside when she drove up. The sense of his unconsciousness startled her, and she flung herself into the house, jaw dropping at the sight of so many bottles. Could vampires get alcohol poisoning? Was that why he was unconscious? “Shit,” she swore, under her breath.

When she finally found him, untidily sprawled on the floor, it was almost a relief. Getting him anywhere else would be a pain, but he didn’t appear to have choked on vomit or anything. Did vampires bleed? Damn, there was too much she didn’t know! She knelt beside him, brushing hair away from his face. “Victor, darling?” she said softly.

Victor’s eyes fluttered open and he smelled blood, his own. He tried to make his hand move to touch his head and was frustrated when his hand moved slower than he wished it would. When his hand finally came back into his blurry field of vision it was covered in a red sticky substance, blood. “Fuck,” he grunted and suddenly he was aware of another presence. He rolled on his side to see who it was and was overcome by a wave of pain. The image of the person next to him looked vaguely like Summer, and the only thing that made him sure that it was her was her scent. He exhaled shakily, still a little drunk. ”‘Ello Summah. Wot’re you doin’ ‘ere?”

The sudden thickness of his accent surprised a choked laugh out of her. “I was coming to surprise you,” she answered, sliding back a little so he could lie on his back. “But I found you like this! What’s going on, Victor darling?” Carefully she spidered her fingers over his head, searching for the spot that was cut. “I think you hit your head pretty hard. Can you sit up?”

Victor’s vision was still a little blurry which worried him but he focused on her words. “I fink so,” he mumbled then let out a startled yelp when she touched his head. “Bloody ‘ell tha’ ‘urt.”

After letting out a sigh he paused a moment then tried to sit up and ended up more slouching against the wall than anything else. “You were gonna surprise me? Well ‘m sorry this is wot you got.”

He cast his eyes down suddenly ashamed. “I’d been doin’ so well y’know? An’ then I’d started rememberin’ an’ well tha’ turned into a glass of scotch which turned inta 6 an’ then a few more bottles.” Victor looked her in the eye, “I know I ‘ave a problem, I thought I’d kicked it but apparently ‘m not as in control as I thought.”

“/Six/?” Summer gaped at Victor. “You fucking IDIOT. You — you — ” She couldn’t even find the wherewithal to swear at him, she was so shocked. “That’s not a problem, Roth, that’s practically suicide. “To Buddy,” Summer echoed, draining her glass. She didn’t even ordinarily drink much, but nothing was as bitter as the taste of her sorrow, of the family’s sorrow that she could already feel leaching into her. The bonds of family were unlike other empathic bonds, but they still carried emotion, and she carried it all. She curled over, around the empty space where her sense of her grandfather had lived, and rocked silently. “I’ll have to go down there tomorrow,” she murmured into her knees.

Victor realized that the amount of sadness and pain she was experiencing was exponentially more than anyone would ever feel. He put his glass down and pulled her to him so that she was sitting on his lap, kissing her head and neck tenderly. “Why do you have to go back there love?”

“Buddy. William Edward Rainault, Jr.” Summer settled herself back into Victor’s arm, needing the warmth of him — why was he warm, as a vampire, the part of her mind trying to just run away wondered — and stared at the wine in her glass. “I don’t know where Buddy came from, but I know why it stuck, because it was just the most literally perfect description of his personality. He was everyone’s buddy. I never saw him angry. I almost never even saw him not smiling — I couldn’t look, at the viewing, because they’d made his face without that little smile, that crinkled the corners of his eyes. It wasn’t him, there.” Abruptly she drank half the glass.

He was a little concerned by the way she had downed half the glass and rubbed his thumb in circles on her shoulder. “They should’ve made him with that smile of his since that’s how he was in life. He sounds like he was a very nice person though, it’s always hard when someone like that moves on from our lives.” Victor paused a moment then twisted his body so that he was facing her a bit more. “Cheers, to Buddy and may he find more happiness wherever he is now.”

Falling

It had happened so easily that at the time, for a split second, it had scared him. How quickly he had reached for the tumbler and scotch, slamming down one after the other. He’d made the mistake of remembering, of taking that damned trip down memory lane. Then again, by the time he had realized it was a bad idea he was already on his 6th glass and working on more. Even when he was human it took a considerable amount to get him drunk but he didn’t know how his vampirism would affect his tolerance. Victor lost count of how many glasses he had had. Bottles were strewn about and for the life of him he couldn’t drown out the memories. He couldn’t drown out the blood; he was soaked in it and so was her dress. How long ago was it? 5 years? 10? A lifetime? He was too far gone to remember anymore. Shakily he got up and started to make his way up the stairs to his bedroom but stopped in the hallway when he saw his reflection in a mirror. He looked like shit. Victor squinted and took a step closer to the mirror only to trip, and hit his head hard on the marble table lining the wall. Apparently he’d had enough to drink to dull all of his reflexes and soon the darkness took over his sight.

For the first time, Summer was headed to Victor’s house. Given his address, it was easy to get there, and she sang contentedly along to her music during the drive. She was hoping to surprise him, though how easy that would be she didn’t know.
