“Being different has never earned me anything but pain,” she whispered, searching his face. “Don’t leave me. Please don’t ever leave me.”
“How do you think other Knights would react to me spontaneously kidnapping a fair Maiden such as yourself? It’s not following command…in fact, should I be caught, I’d be punished and locked up, at the very least,” he murmured absently, before twisting to face her, a small smile tugging at his lips. “I won’t leave if you want me to stay, Summer. You have my word.”
She shook her head, stroking her fingertips down his cheek. “Where you come from, it is obviously very different. In the land of the Argents, a knight may do as he likes, so long as he has force of arms to enforce it. His rank sets him above the laws which govern the lower classes. Lord Argent’s knights would cheer you on, and doubtless bargain with you for the use of my body when you are finished.”
