She flinched back at his words. “Perhaps I was mistaken about your feelings. I am sorry, my lord,” she said stiffly. “I thought I had made my desires clear.”

He let out an agitated noise and reached for her, shaking his head. “That’s not what I meant! I meant…I meant that I want you to want me, because you want me…not just because there’s danger coming. You have no idea how much I want you, Summer, and I’m trying so hard to remain a gentleman right now…”

“Don’t,” she said bluntly. “Don’t be a gentleman. Don’t be chivalrous, don’t be a knight. Be a man in love, be the man who loves me. Because I love you.”
