wait but why is everybody mad about cumberbund playing doctor strange?

granted i know nothing about doctor strange like i’m serious please explain

My operating theory is that despite Dr Strange’s comic history (boy from Iowa, whose parents have pretty whitebread names, earns a doctorate in NYC and has POWERFUL magic), there’s a lot of pushback in some of MCU fandom regarding the number of middle-age white men playing leading parts. Dr Strange’s general appearance (black hair, van dyke beard) lends itself to being non-white, and people are afraid of the Cumberbitches (the crazy ones not us sane Cumbercollective) coming in and taking over and being nasty the way they supposedly did in Star Trek fandom. There’s also some pushback against him specifically because of how fannishly popular he is; ‘people’ want someone less well known the way Tom Hiddleston and/or Chris Hemsworth were before Avengers.

is he a poc in the comics tho?  is he even shown in the comics?

because if so that is pretty shitty

if not, don’t hate him just because he’s popular haha

like i know khan was supposed to be a poc so that was lame, but to be honest cumberbabe is actually a fantastic actor so like if it’s gonna be a middle aged white guy, at least it’s him.  not some shitty dreamy chiseled man candy thing that can’t actually act or whatever.

but yeah it’s always weird seeing someone whos iconic for a different role try to play something else.

its like dan radcliff trying to do anything now, he’ll always just be harry potter. :/

Based on heritage, history, birth location, family names, and artwork, Dr Strange is a white guy in the comics. He is a white guy in the video games. He is featured in a number of comics involving the Infinity Gems, and had his own title for a while.

if that’s the case then why are people making this a race issue???

like there ARE race issues right now, but if this isn’t one then why make it one

i’m confused and i just want to like marvel because yay marvel

The race issue is, quite honestly, because fancasting for the last two years has been Dr Strange played by someone like Jason Momoa or similar appearance (Oded Behr) — and people don’t want to let that go. The belief is that there are too many MCU movies headlined by a middle-aged white guy, and Dr Strange is an opportunity to step away from that.

Literally, it’s a made-up issue.
